Thanks for all the info!

How would adding memory slow it down? I seem to remember things running faster when I added it (from 128 to 256).

2 things really improve your graphics speed - memory on motherboard and memory on graphics card. 98 doesnt support the latest variations.98 doesn't support the latest variations on what -- the motherboard or the graphics card, or both?!

77 - ping - you jogged my memory, it is 180, where the break is. I had 64, added 128 to dramatically increase speed, then later I added another 128, and it turned into a slug. took it back out and it worked fine again. checked the new memory, it was good. Then started checking with techies and found out the bug in 98. but they lost me explaining it, and said get 2000.

memory of both mother board and graphics card. but the operating systems and motherboards must be able to support them. this is why I said, just get a new complete system. You can transfer your software applications programs and your data.

sorry for the error in 76

"type exactly at the right arrow prompt DIR REGFIX /? I think this is the right file, and it is usually in the Windows directory or in the main directory. "

it should be :

scanreg /fix
rem this command should be done by booting machine in Dos -
start machine with F8 key down
rem enter formats:
rem - scanreg /? - info
rem - scanreg /backup - backup the registry and related configuration files
rem - scanreg /fix - repairs the registry
rem - scanreg /comment="" - adds comment to the CAB file while backing up

fixing the registry periodically will make your machine run faster and better, as will SCANDISK, AND OPTIMIZING your drive there are all kinds of little tricks to clean and fix your machine to make it run better, without getting a new machine. It's called maintaining your machine. And don't forget your anti-virus stuff too. steer clear of Macafee - it is a real pain in the bu__. note all these files come with Windows98
