While some here are cheering, the real victory is for the successful Dem spin campaign and distraction to the conservative objectives of this administration - they can claim another win. Whatever the reasons are for the dislike of Trent Lott, the statement at the birthday party of a 100 year old man is not a real reason to send him packing. This is character assassination at its finest. I'm disappointed in the bloodthirstiness of some on FR.

Apparently we are in cync with both the president and a majority of GOP senators.

If Lott has half a brain he'll realize that if Richard Nixon, George Wallace, Jesse Jackson, and even Bill Clinton (after impeachment) can make a political comeback, so can he. He has all the rest of his term, and his life for that matter, to show what a champion of civil rights he truly is. To have quit the Senate would have been really dumb.

I suppose he could start by having an affair with Condi Rice but maybe that's going a bit too far!

Amen and amen again.

Not so... once they realized Lott's position was in real jeopardy, Democrats were knocking each other down to get to microphones to say they thought this firestorm had gone far enough. They wanted a Republican Party permanently stained by Lott's mistake, with a cringing, capitulating Senate leader trying endlessly to make amends -- truly the best of both worlds from their perspective.

Instead, we have better leadership (in all cases) and the chance to turn the race worm back on the bad guys. Our position is that discriminating by race is wrong. Doesn't matter which way. That's going to resonate with some folks who used to buy the Republicans-are-racist propaganda they see on ABCNNBCBS.
