Please permit me my 3 minutes on a soap box. I lived in Montgomery, Alabama, for almost 18 years. Mr. Clark obviously doesn't know jack about the good people of Alabama! To a person, all the "native" Alabamians were much more genuinely concerned than ANY (as in, every single one) politically-correct outsider that the blacks/African-Americans/whateverthehellthecurrentpoliticallycorrectnameis in Alabama were treated fairly and AS HUMAN BEINGS! This drivel by "historian" Clark (and I use the term very loosely) is pure horse hockey.

"This drivel by "historian" Clark (and I use the term very loosely) is pure horse hockey." You may be more right than you know.
E. Culpepper Clark is Dean of the College of Communication at Tuscaloosa (of course) and not really a historian, at all.
After spending eight years in the Montgomery area (Lowndesboro), I concur that the only bigotry I observed was in relation to criminality and corruption, rather than skin color.
