Even as Senate Republicans struggled last week to defend the civil rights record of their leader and their party, a look inside Senate offices show there are few African-Americans in key, influential jobs.

Among the Senate staff members in executive positions, such as chief of staff or communications director, 94.5 percent are white, 3.1 percent are black and 2 percent are Hispanic, according to a 2001 survey by the Congressional Management Foundation, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization based in Washington.

If there's an overall shortage, then the black Democrats must have lots of white staffers. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

In general, I'm not a believer in "lack of proportional representation" being an indicator of some kind of racist conspiracy, but I do think that here it does indicate something. We all have a tendency to hire people we know, people who aren't an unknown risk. Who travel in the circles we do. I a predominantly black city like DC, you'd thing the "proportional representation" would lead to more minorities. How did the sensitive Democrats become so insensitive?

Chalk it up to more weird DC, where the laws that pass for us, don't apply to them, because they write themselves out of it.

LOL--I remember a recent story about Congressional staffing.It included a comment by a black woman on Strom Thurmond's or Jesse Helms' staff (can't remember which Senator). The black staff member was asked, "How can you possibly work for him?" (i.e., work for a "racist")

Her answer: "He pays better than the Democrats pay."

OK - lets make everthing "Look like America"! Why not start with the NBA and the NFL. Since America is approximately 85-90 % white, let's have an NFL that
is 85 -90$ white, and 10% black. Same with the NBA!

Niether the good Doctor nor I are a believer in group rights. We are merely returning fire on the demoRats, i.e, put your money where yor mouth is, pratice what you preach, etc.

As for the over representation in sports you need to think back to the glory days of the sweet science. It is one way for the poor to get money fast. The Jews, Irish and Italians dominated boxing at one time. Basketball and football is a tough way to make a living.
