Dande, I've been living here in the Metroplex for almost 7 years, and I can't recall seeing more than a couple of bolos. As far as the boots go, I think it's because a good pair of boots are very easy on the feet.

As to men and mismatched socks, I'll have to defer to your wisdom. ;^)

I've lived in Texas for over 20 years, and there is a definite can-do spirit here. I live in Valley Ranch, and I see that attitude on most everybody in my community, be they white, black, brown, green, purple.

Speaking of schools, my sister visited from Oakland, CA a few years back. Her jaw dropped when she saw our schools and resources for our kids. She also remarked pointedly how everybody was so friendly here.

I could go on, but I've gotta get back to work. Texas has been very good to me, and I'm proud to be a naturalized Texan.

I used to get ticked off reading such simplistic articles that try and capture the essence of Texas. Now, I just shrug them off, and move on down the road.

Except with the exodus of the middle class jobs and the movement of high tec to India ....I wonder who will be left to pay?? Have ya watched the riots on TV??Coming in 15 years or so to America North...We are witnessing the selling of America...

Mexicans haven't ruined our culture, Kalifornians have. How to keep them from emigrating is the issue.

True.  Most of the bigger cities no longer have that "Texas flavor" to them.   For the most part, the huge number of  transplants have watered things down to the point that there's very little "Texian" left anymore.

We don't wear bolo ties, ostrich skin boots, and ten gallon hats in Dallas. That's Houston.

No, it's not. Except during the Houston Rodeo (a unique extravaganza), you almost never see "western wear" in Houston. Downtown, you see normal boring business attire. In the Galleria and Energy Corridor, you're going to see business casual with golf shirts and even Hawaiian prints.

I have a couple pair of exotic boots from my stint in Midland, but they don't get much use in Houston.

That sums it up ptetty well, can-do attitude.
While it has been shown this can-do attitude can also work very well when put to nefarious ends, Enron, the Hunt brothers, Cullen Davis, the past is littered with them.
Being a Texan isn't about being in a physical state, it is about being in a physical state of mind.

There is one big reason Texas is not saddled with all kinds of draconian laws that inhibit your freedom like most other states. It is that the legislature meets only for a few months every other year.

Where there are continuous legislatures in session (including the US Congress foremost) there is an overwhelming need for legislators to DO SOMETHING, no matter how ill-advised it may be. They have to justify their existence. They will enact laws that gradually bit-by-bit erode your freedom. We thank God this does not happen as much in Texas.

The saying is, "in Texas everything either stinks, sticks, stings or strikes". One of my friends in Colorado says that Texas is "a great place to keep oil". I just want to find a way to spend the hot part of the summer in the mountains. Texas is just fine the rest of the time.

My property in Texas that I paid $75K for two years ago would go for close to $175K in Colorado. Or it would have this year, we will see about next year.

ROTFL! The poor folks from California-we used to say the same thing about them in Colorado. I thought I went through culture shock when I moved to Texas from Colorado. It was NOTHING compared to what my friends from California went through when they moved here!

There is a man up the road from me who does just that. Colorado in the summer, Texas in the winter.
I do prefer the current state of taxation as opposed to an income tax though.
