December 26, 2002 -- President Bush has ordered that America's long-delayed missile-defense system finally be deployed.
It's good news.
Indeed, Americans already can feel a tad safer, given that the order may make enemies think twice today about developing missiles to use against America or its allies: Not only would such an attack risk swift and severe retaliation, but the attack itself may well be defeated by America's new defensive weaponry.

It wasn't ready earlier. It isn't clear whether it's ready now. It's best not to deploy it until it can do the job.
