Wetlands are marshy, swampy or boggy areas that filter and cleanse drinking water, retain flood waters, harbor fish and shellfish and support other wildlife, such as by providing stopping points for migratory birds. Their destruction contributes to flooding, pollution runoff into streams and rivers and loss of important habitat for fish and wildlife.
