I've sent out hundreds of resumes and haven't had a nibble

And I bet that you are steadfastly insisting on considering only jobs that pay you your former salary...
Nothing for less, not even temporarily.

Good point.

When my husband was out of work we immediately scaled back our living expenses. He did maintenance jobs and woodworking (built decks, etc) and I cleaned houses and worked in an espresso bar friends own. My husband and I both have college degrees and he worked in a white collar world. It was not *below* us to do what was necessary. Looking back, it was the best thing that could of happened to us. We changed our lifestyle to be simpler and more meaningful. He found a great job working less hours for less pay and we're still thrilled. We've since downsized our home size considerably and enjoy our simple lifestyle. :o)

Mega Dittos. Its amazing how people feel their entitled to work in a certain profession, and are inflexible to changing careers or taking a job that pays less. But its damn okay for them to make others pay so they can sit home, send resumes in the mail or email, and satisfy themselves they've lived up to their end of the bargain.

I wonder how long it would take you to find a new job if you were laid off tomorrow. I think that unless you have plenty of connections with available positions, you would find it very difficult.

My husband was out of work for almost 10 months. Not that he did not look, no one would hire him. Not even for a department store job. Over qualified. Finally he did get a job as a gas station cashier, but the girl was reluctant to hire him for the same reasons. Shortly after he got that job about one month later he got his present position. When he gave notice she said she understood and that was why she had reservations about hiring him.

It is always so easy to knock others when you are not in the same position.

I posted this on the other thread with this topic, but it's relevant here:

My Real Estate business cratered last year. Being self employed I didn't have the option of unemployment, and there were no jobs here either. I got a job waiting tables. See, sometimes we have to buck up and take a lesser job than we would really like. When most people whine, "there are no jobs", that's code for, there are jobs, I just think I'm too good to take them.

Business is back now, and I never had to depend on ANY government welfare in the meantime. (still have the waiting job 1 or 2 days per week)

No kidding, this is the stuff that outrages me when my hubby took a job with *INITIALL* a 10000 a year pay drop and a position that is different than his last, yet in the same field. I can tell you with much assurance that he would have worked in a local factory if that's what it would have taken for us to make it. What is it with high tech folks? I get the feeling many were just waiting it out on their EXTENDED benefits in hopes their fields would pick up again instead of actually getting training in another field just in case. Now they are crying when they didn't hedge their bets.

People on unemployment were TAXPAYERS and wouldn't get a fraction of their stolen money back from the gov't in a 100 years.

Funny you should say that. I was layed off in NYC right after Sept. 11. It was Oct 5th 2001 to be exact. And I immediately went on Unemployment because I had no income coming in and was out of work for 8 months pounding the pavement every day. Finally I was able to get a job at $13,000 less a year than what I was previously making. I took it because I knew I needed money and would probably still be out if I didn't. The whole time I was out there I knew and the employment agencies told me that I would NOT get the same salary I was making. Believe me when I got the job I was so happy to have work that I didn't care and I still don't. I look at it this way - when the job market picks up again (and it will) I can always look for another job making more money.
