STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Police shot dead a drunken bull elk that attacked a young boy while intoxicated on fermented apples, Swedish daily Aftonbladet reported Monday.
The elk attacked the 8-year-old as he played in the garden of his home in the town of Karlskoga in central Sweden. The youngster was badly shaken but escaped serious injury, suffering only a bruised neck.
Elk, common in sparsely populated Sweden, are normally shy creatures but they can become aggressive when they eat rotten apples, a favorite winter snack that can make them drunk.

Elk in Scandanavia are actually moose, so don't be fooled - this is actually a moose and cheese thread...

In Swedish, they are called älg. (Pronounced like "elly," the word is related to our word, "elk," I believe.) Saw some wandering on my cousin's farm in western Sweden this past August. They are smaller than our moose.

Where did the young boy get the fermented apples anyway?
Did the moose know the boy was intoxicated?
Where does the Cheese come into this story?
What about the boy's sister, did the moose bite her too?
I'm going to take a shower, be back soon.

Thank goodness it was a bull elk. (At first I was thinking that this was going to be a tough one for the Elk's Club to explain.)

Actually, that was a line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. In real life, I don't have a sister.

They are smaller than our moose But they are of the same species -- just different geographical races. European Elk and North American Moose are both Alces alces. The North American "elk" (wapiti) is actually a large, tan variant of the European red deer, Cervus elaphus. Confusing.

I have my suspicions that this report may be inaccurate. I believe it was Anne Elk, who'd been drinking after a series bout with writer's block.

Butterflies also
get drunk. They sip liquids from
rotting and decayed
fruit. They rarely need
to be shot. But they've evolved
camouflage patterns
specifically to
protect them from predators
while they're wacked on brew.
The natural world
is a wild and wacky place.
Drunk bugs. Drunk elk. Cheers!
