CMU, an AA/EO institution, strongly and actively strives to increase diversity and provide equal opportunity within its community. CMU does not discriminate in employment against persons based on age, color, disability, gender, familial status, height, marital status, national origin, political persuasion, race, religion, sexual orientation, veteran status, or weight (see
http://www.cmich.edu/aaeo/).
Affirmative action is a set of specific and results-oriented measures taken to bring about equal opportunity. At CMU, the Affirmative Action Office coordinates and monitors the university's affirmative action/equal opportunity efforts and programs to assure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Executive Order 11246 and other relevant state and federal statutes.
The office supervises the maintenance of related reports and records, provides and develops related educational programs and materials, offers guidance and advice to all community members on the University's nondiscrimination and affirmative action policies and procedures, assists departments with recruitment and retention activities, and receives and resolves complaints of discrimination from students, employees and others.
To view the Board of Trustees Nondiscrimination Policy, see
http://www.cmich.edu/aaeo/bot-nondis.htm.

That is what my thought was - they send them over to little "Pomtemkin Villages". Too bad she did not get to see the torture chambers, the Havana slums, the large prisons of dissidents, or blocks full of informants. No doubt that vaccuos youg lady who said she would say to President Bush, "Dude, whats your problem?" has no idea that this was democrat JFK's policy and has be continued since.

"I think universities around the United States are seeing this as a good site to give students the opportunity to look at a lot of issues at once," Peggy Blumenthal said. "To look at the issue of Cuba, per se, is to look at a communist system compared to a capitalist system, as well as the opportunity to look at transition issues" facing a developing nation.Developing nation? Developing into what? Are they allowing cars from the 60s now?

I'm not against this program itself. The problem is the education that they're receiving in this country. After that indoctrination, the idea of living at the will of the state, working for pittances on collective farms, and socialized (though decades behind) medicine seem noble.
A properly educated and thinking student could use his time down there to strengthen his understanding of the universal truth of politics - communism kills the spirit, mind, and body of the people it doesn't just outright murder.

""Sometimes I wish I could talk to George Bush about Cuba and say, `Look, dude. These people aren't evil. What's your problem?'" Phend said."And yet, she wouldn't say the same thing to Clinton, even though he kept in place the self-same embargo against which she rails.
You've got to love the way Lefties use every concievable criticism against their opponents. Oh sure, blame Bush for an embargo started by Democratic Party President Kennedy, continued by Noble Peace Prize winning President Carter, and furthered by her idol President Clinton. Yup, blame Bush.
That's the liberal "logic". IF something is wrong, anything, then it is the Republicans' fault.
Forget that the emabrgo is in place due to Castro's confiscation of American businesses as well as the personal property of Americans in Cuba. Forget that the embargo is meant to punish Cuba's torture of Africans in Cuba's Algerian war. Forget that the embargo halts the rewarding of Cuba's political Apartheid (Blacks aren't permitted to be in high positions of power in Cuba). Forget that the embargo is a PEACEFUL way to punish the nation that supplied its own tanks and soldiers for the Arab invasion of Israel in 1973. Forget that Cuba trains Palestinians in the making of explosives to this very day.
Yup, you've got to forget all of that, and then you have to ignore all of the Democratic Party Presidents who first initiated and later continued the embargo against Cuba, all so that such idiotic young minds can blame Bush.
Classic.

Kenwood, which houses 10 women this year, is located at 1613 8th Street and is famous for having the coolest front porch in the world, according to Sarah Phend, a junior. The old white house also has three small stained-glass windows along their staircase with intricate wood detail on the banister, said Ann Albrecht, a junior. The staircase also turns twice, which you would know, said Phend, if you tried to slide down it on a mattress. ... Kenwood house also has a compost pile named Helga and a quote board.
When someone says something stupid, said Phend, we write it on the quote board for everyone to see.

The nephew of the priest in whose parish I grew up died a few weeks ago in Cuba, so the Cuban authorities say, when he fell out of a taxi in Havana.
He was an international relations major who had just defended his honours thesis at Venceremos University. His thesis was on the subject of human rights, if I recall correctly.
In one of life's strange ironies, his uncle had just finished angering his parish with three weeks of sermons praising Fidel Castro's regime as a veritable Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
