2000 Census results

To avoid the weirdness that comes from all of the combinations from multiple race entries for a single person (2000 was the first year this was used), I just listed those who claimed only one race.

White alone 75.1%
Black alone 12.3%
American Indian alone 0.9%
Asian alone 3.6%
Pacific Islander 0.1%
Hispanic 6.7%... I took this from a separate chart, since on the main chart, Hispanic is included as a subset of every other race, including Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (total: 126,265!)

Hmmm... Only 18.7 million Hispanics in America??? I don't buy that. There's easily that many in CA and TX alone. Or were they only counting citizens, and not residents?

Cute... the 1990 census has 22.3 million Hispanics ("of any race"). I guess they're actually leaving the U.S. in droves, LOL.

WHY THE WHITE WORKING CLASS STILL MATTERS

Because we generally have jobs at companies that issue W-2s and our income stream can't
escape the wiles of the IRS...

Thanks for the research, putting accurate numbers against all the guessing that's been going on.

One of the probable reasons for the "undercount" on Hispanics is that many Hispanics of my acquaintance here in Texas are offended by the notion that they are somehow less than 100% American. Their ancestors fought with Sam Houston and Antonio de Zavala, after all.

Your numbers may be a bit behind the times.

marketing people who are usually more on top of things than what the Gov lets on to knowing think that Latinos have already surpassed African Americans by a wide margin.

Okay, I think I've got the right numbers. I'm using charts QT-P3 and DP-1 (1990) from the US Census Bureau webpage.

1990 TOTAL = 248,709,873
BY RACE AND HISPANIC ORIGIN

80.2% White - 199,686,070 (includes Hispanic)
12.1% Black - 29,986,060
0.8% .American Indian, Eskimo, or Aleut - 1,959,234
2.9% .Asian or Pacific Islander - 7,273,662
3.9% .Other race - 9,804,847
9.0% .Hispanic origin (of any race) - 22,354,059

2000 TOTAL - 281,421,906

75.1% White - 211,460,626 (includes Hispanic)
12.3% Black or African American - 34,658,190
0.9% .American Indian and Alaska Native - 2,475,956
3.6% .Asian - 10,242,998
0.1% .Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander - 398,835
5.5% .Some other race - 15,359,073
2.4% .Two or more races - 6,826,228
12.5% Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 35,305,818
sub-categories of Hispanic or Latino
7.3% .Mexican - 20,640,711
1.2% .Puerto Rican - 3,406,178
0.4% .Cuban - 1,241,685
3.6% .Other Hispanic or Latino - 10,017,244

Subtracting Hispanics from 1990,
Whites would be 71.2%, Blacks 12.1%, and Hispanic 9.0%, Asian 2.9%, American Indian 0.9%, Other 3.9%
Total 100.0% Yay!
Subtracting Hispanics from 2000,
Whites would be 62.6%, Blacks 12.3%, and Hispanics 12.5%, Asian 3.6%, American Indian 0.9%, Other 5.5%, Two or more races, 2.4%
Total 99.8% close enough for me.
