"Das Boot"

Ah yes, good call. One of my all time favorites. It's been so long since I have seen it, it might be new all over again. Has to be the subtitled version though. I remember looking for it a few years ago at blockbuster, and all they had was the dubbed version. I didn't waste my time on that. It is a great movie -- maybe I can find it in DVD.

Hart's War (2002) starring Bruce Willis and Colin Farrell (new Irish actor) as American POW's in a Nazi war camp. Another version of a "Great Escape" type movie. Available for rental in video stores. Based on a true story that actually involved British POW's. There was a lot of controversy (from the Brits) that the filmmakers changed the nationalities of the heroes in the film. Oh well, that's Hollywood. (!)

"A Bridge Too Far" - excellent photography.

"Soldier of Orange" - they cut some minor scenes out of the version dubbed into English; also available with subtitles.

"Stalag 17"

"Berlin Express" - filmed on location in Germany in 1946. Those aren't Hollywood sets.

If you can find it, get a Russian movie called "Come and See." About Stalingrad, made by Russians, you get the picture...

One American made movie that came in completely under the radar is "When Trumpets Fade," about the Hurtgen Forest. Interesting story, intense combat scenes, very well-made.

Steve McQueen did a great WWII flick, the title I'm not sure. Think it was "The War Lover," or something like that. In the end, bringing his beat up aircraft back to England, he crashed into, think the cliffs of Dover. Was first time I noticed McQueen might make it as a serious actor.

Is the movie "A Bridge Too Far" about the Market Garden fiasco?

Anybody like "Thin Red Line"? Not me. Although there was some very good scenes in it, I found it pretty damn pretentious in its artsy-fartsy indulgences and pedantic philosophizing . I guess it's fair to say it was for the most part unwatchable.

I'm a big History channel nut for the real McCoys - the documentaries showing the actual events, shorne of any particular message that movies inevitably are burdened with.

My Dad did convoy duty in WW2 so I rented "Das Bot" for him. He said the scene were the U-boat was in a storm brought back memories of storms in the North Atlantic he was in.
It was a pretty grim movie and showed that the German Navy was the least nazi-fied of their military branches.

WWII from a different angle - Mrs Miniver, Since You Went Away (from David O Selznick), Great Escape (David McCallum in one of the great bucket-kicking scenes of all time IMHO), Mister Roberts, Foreign Correspondent by Hitchcock, Casablanca, and Pimpernel Smith (Leslie Howard)

The Highest Honor is one of the most provocative and unusual movies to come out of WW II.

And it IS a true story.

Australian film, concerning a raid on Singapore Harbor and the eventual capture and imprisonment of the Australian and British raiders.

The film will stay with you for the rest of your life.
