White Dads More Likely To Allow Toy Guns

Why do some parents allow their children to play with toy guns, while others shudder at the thought?

According to a study by a Johns Hopkins researcher, race, gender and other social factors may help explain. The study is published in the January issue of Pediatrics.

Dr. Tina Cheng and colleagues surveyed more than 900 parents and guardians visiting pediatricians' offices in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs. The survey included questions on child-rearing attitudes and practices, lifestyle, and demographic information. More than half of all respondents were black, and the majority were mothers.

Almost 70 percent of parents surveyed felt it was "never OK" for a parent to let a child play with toy guns. The parents who allowed their children to play with toy guns were more likely to be white males, with male children. Mothers of younger children were more likely to limit toy gun play.

In general, researchers found the gender and age of the child, gender of the parent, and race of the family factored significantly into parents' attitudes about allowing their children to play with toy guns.

"This study calls attention to an issue that has been largely unstudied -- assessing community norms on toy gun play from the perspective of parents," said Cheng, director of general pediatrics and adolescent medicine at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Cheng led the study while at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

According to Cheng, some studies have linked toy gun play with aggressive behavior, and some child health professionals counsel families to limit this type of activity. Critics say children playing with toy guns may confuse them with real guns.

"There needs to be more study on the impact of toy gun play on child behavior. Understanding what parents think about issues like toy gun play and what their parenting practices are may be a first step in designing effective community-based prevention programs," Cheng said.

I never would allow my son to own a "toy" gun. But when he was old enough, I taught him to shoot my firearms. His favorite was a .22 Ruger handgun. His least favorite was my 30-06 hunting rifle.

The survey was taken in the DC area? My! but isn't that a lovely sample population! I wonder what kind of results they'd have gotten if they ventured a little further into the real world.

Do the same critics say children playing with toy SUVs may confuse them with real SUVs?

In the third world city of Detroit, the africanhyphenamericans have created people's shooting galleries. The gangsta element drives down the street and target practises by shooting innocent black kids and others off of front porches and front yards. We're not supposed to notice that because Detroit is undergoing its 1,000,000th revitalization plan since the rise and fall of Coolman A. Young. We get to pay.

The crazy/terrifying thing is why this agenda is in a pediatrics journal.

Translation: We need to study this in order to make our propaganda more effective. If we can delegitimize guns with children, we may be able to go the route of Great Britain.

The scary thing here is that many of these people believe their own lies.

The next step is to label the desire to think for one's self a mental illness. Keep a watch on those psychiatric journals...

PROPOSED TOY-GUN BAN PROVES CRIME DOES NOT ‘PLAY'

By FRANKIE EDOZIEN

January 6, 2003 -- The City Council is moving forward with sweeping legislation aimed at banning the sale and possession of all toy guns - including the water pistols kids shoot in the summer.
Current city law prohibits the sale of realistic looking toy guns, but the proposed amendment would extend the ban to the brightly colored and transparent toys that remain legal.

The bill was introduced last October, but the recent spate of cop shootings involving toy guns has given it new urgency, lawmakers said.

"If you spray-paint a toy gun black, it clearly looks like a real gun," David Weprin (D-Queens), a sponsor of the law, said yesterday. "Therefore, we're taking it one step further and basically disallowing any sale of any toy gun in the city of New York."

Weprin brandished his 11-year-old daughter's toy - which he spray-painted black - next to a photo of the realistic toy gun that cost a Harlem 17-year-old his life last week.

The suspected mugger, 17-year-old Allen Newsome, was shot dead after holding the toy to an officer's head, police said.

Lt. Eric Adams, co-founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, a fraternal organization of cops, said officers don't have the luxury of time to examine guns.

"You have four to five seconds to make a determination to save your life, your partner's life, or an innocent person's," he said.

"You don't have the opportunity to feel a toy gun to see if it squirts water."

Councilman Albert Vann, a Brooklyn Democrat and co-sponsor of the bill, said toy guns should be banned because criminals are increasingly using them to commit real crimes.

"Adults that are criminal-minded are using toy guns because they know that, if caught, the penalty is less severe," Vann said.

Some large toy retailers have voluntarily pulled such guns from their shelves.

A penalty of up to $1,000 for retailers is being considered. But no penalty yet for the thornier issue of toy gun possession has been agreed upon.

May I suggest a sentence of two weeks of "Timeout".

King Bloomberg will have the final say, I'm sure.

How would this sample be representitive of what "White Dads" would do in general?

Junk Poll!!!

Poor kid. If he hadn't had a toy gun he would have been home studying math.
