failed to explain how it could have shrunk while in state custody.

Doesn't leather dry and stiffen when it gets wet? Plus, his hands were large to begin with. The gloves may never have perfectly fit in the first place (speculation on my part).

Also, when you have a person who is trying to get away with murder in the first place, he's going to act as if the glove is too tight. All a person would have to do is subtly flex certain parts of the hand, feign consternation over the "tightness" of the glove, and act as if it is impossible to pull over the hand.

As Jackie Chiles said on Seinfeld: you can't let the defendant have control over a key piece of evidence.
