I honestly did not know until I married a soldier that you were supposed to stand when the flag was displayed. In my first 21 years, never once did someone tell me.

You don't have to stand for every flag in a parade - only the ones displayed by an official color guard. If you had to stand for every flag that was displayed, you would never sit down at our local parades. There are some old-timers that wouldn't be able to handle that.

I bet you're on to something. Perhaps the standing man is a veteran and knows the proper etiquette. I bet he knows the proper way to fold a flag also. I doubt the people sitting are being intentionally disrespectful. However, it is a great photo but I wouldn't knock the people sitting. People who burn the flag though, are not on my favored list.

Actually, I didn't know that until I read this thread. :) I had no idea that you are supposed to stand and remove your hat for the presenting of the colors, I thought it was only for the playing of the National Anthem. I done got edumacated today, thanks! :)
