The leftists economics as a zero-sum game. If you are successful, obviously your success must come at the expense of someone else. Similarly, they see the great success of America as a sort of theft from undeveloped countries, rather than an example for less successful countries to emulate.
The cheerful news is that hating success and rewarding failure doesn't work in the long run. Eventually the leftists always find the failure they seek, regardless of how much wealth and political control they have managed to commandeer. The only variable is how much tyranny, misery and destruction occurs along the way.
As survivors of the former Soviet Union will attest, the price can be rather high.
