The Big Lie Before the Supreme Court
frontpagemag ^ | 1/15/03 | David Horowitz

The President has decided to weigh in against race preferences in the University of Michigan Supreme Court case. This may be a small step for the President but it is a giant one for the country. Race preferences are a stain on the nation, a legacy of the segregationist and slavery past when the color of one's skin determined whether a person was free or not, privileged or discriminated against.

The argument for race preferences -- the argument of the University of Michigan, the civil rights left and the Democratic Party -- is based on a Big Lie. The Big Lie is that race preferences in university admissions are needed because of racism that keeps blacks and other racial and gender groups out. A second Big Lie is that "diversity" is the goal that defines a race-free world.

There are no racists in the University of Michigan Admissions Department -- or at least no racists keeping blacks and other designated minority groups out. If there were, the University of Michigan would be looking for them and rooting them out and the Justice Department would be prosecuting them for violating the law. Not a single civil rights group has ever identified a racist in the admissions office of the University of Michigan or any other major college or university in the country. Not a single university official at the University of Michigan or any other major university has ever been prosecuted for discriminating illegally against a minority applicant. That is because everyone knows that racism is not the problem when it comes to low admissions rates for blacks and other designated minority groups. The problem is poor test scores, the inability to compete equally when the rules are neutral and not rigged in their favor. The reasons for this incompetence are many -- corrupt inner city K-12 schools run by liberals and Democrats, lack of stable two-parent homes, anti-intellectual cultural attitudes. But none them will be addressed as long as the Big Lie that white racists are holding minorities back persists.

The Big Lie of diversity is that it is about promoting a race free environment. On the contrary. Diversity -- as practiced in today's colleges -- is a form of racism, and in fact is the most thriving form of racism in America today. It identifies individuals by race, raises race consciousness and discrminates against most minorities. Chinese and Japanese students are minorities but they are denied access to universities across the country because of the diversity quotas. Indians from the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lankans are minorities "of color" but they are officially designated "white" and are discriminated against by diversity quotas. Jews are a minority but they are held back and excluded because they are considered white. There are thousands of minority ethnic, religious and racial groups in America and there is no way that a diversity quota could include all but a tiny handful of them. Diversity quotas are in their very conception racist.

The President is to be congratulated for taking up the battle against race preferences and diversity quotas -- that is, against the legacies of America's discriminatory past that are now defended by people calling themselves civil rights advocates. Huey Long once said that if fascism came to America, it would come calling itself democracy. Why should anyone be surprised that racism in America describes itself as a movement for civil rights?

>>Huey Long once said that if fascism came to America, it would come calling itself democracy<<

Ok, I've had it! Ever since I went out on a limb and cut my hair in a flat top, I have had total strangers come up to me and say I look like Huey Long. Who the He** is Huey Long and why is Horowitz quoting him?

Good article though...

Huey Long was the corrupt, populist ("a chicken in every pot" was his slogan) govenor of Louisiana. A great deal of speculation about his Presidential aspirations. He was assasinated in the La. State Capital in 1935.

At the time of his murder, Huey Long was senator from Louisiana. Another Southern politician called him "the smartest lunatic I ever saw." Robert Penn Warren's novel All the King's Men is a roman a clef based on his career.

I'm glad he is weighing in, but I don't see it as courageous. He will lose no black votes and he will lose no liberal votes. AA is so unpopular that any votes lost from the "center", i.e. Soccor Mom types, will be more than made up for by others in the "center." I think it is the only good political strategy. My eyebrows are up only because it took him so long--but, again, that may be good strategy also, so that he wasn't hammered for months in the media.
