Dennis is very intelligent, and has always shared some views with conservatives and libertarians. He supports some socialism and some authoritarianism, but probably no more than the typical "Republican".
Also remember, he is a comedian. His job is to make jokes at the expense of whoever he can. He can not totally alineate any potential audience. The things you mentioned that he made jokes of are typically ultra-left ideas that the average person, whether "conservative" or "liberal" do not particularly subscribe to.
I have always liked him because of his intelligent humor.

I liked him because he let Steve Allen guest host his old talk show (and even had Steve co-host when Dennis was really too sick to talk; guest band leader was Screamin' Jay Hawkins).
Good to hear some jokes on the other side of the fence for once (in the 1990s, some thought it was enough of a punchline to say "because he's a Republican").
I do my part to curb the problems of carribou; ever have a carribou burger? Mmmmm.
