Jesse Jackson declared yesterday that Wall Street was built on an "African burial ground" and derived its prosperity "on the backs of African people," reports CNSNews.com.
At a panel discussion marking the sixth annual Rainbow/Push Coalition's Wall Street Project fund-raiser in New York City, Jackson condemned the financial district for its role in the transportation of African slaves through its historical links to the shipping industry.
"Wall Street is built on the backs of African people. It is an African burial ground down here. Wall Street was built on the shipping industry," Jackson said.
Jackson used the opportunity of the fund-raiser to press for slave reparations and affirmative action.
"In 1840, there was more Africans enslaved in New York than there was in Charleston, S.C.," he said. "So if we didn't know all our history, then the conclusion [that blacks deserve reparations] might seem unfair," he said.
CNSNews.com reports Jackson also claimed that the influx of immigrants to America during the late 19th century stemmed from government handouts.
"People didn't come here looking for religious freedom; people came here looking for 100 free acres, the right to kill an Indian and free labor," he said.
Jackson believes government policies throughout history have left African-Americans sitting in the back of the bus of economic opportunities.
"At the beginning of the [20th] century, before we had the right to vote, all these [economic] territories were given away - automobile territories, fast food franchise territories, federal licenses, Homestead Act land grants, universities, all of this was given as largess," he said.
In an interview with CNSNews.com, Jackson denounced the Bush administration's racial policies, declaring "the government has turned its back on us."
"There is no future in limiting the marketplace. That is why it is so strange that on the actual date of Martin Luther King's birth [Jan. 15], when the marketplace is looking for ways to open the door, President Bush is drawing up litigation to figure out ways to close the doors," Jackson said in reference to Bush's announcement he opposes the University of Michigan's race-based admissions policies and had asked the solicitor general to file a brief with the Supreme Court in a discrimination case.
One panelist invited to the diversity forum sharply disagreed with Jackson's stances on affirmative action and reparations.
"Discrimination is wrong whether the victim is white or black or the victim is male or female. ... Rev. Jackson is encouraging companies to engage in exactly the kind of discrimination that the civil rights movement opposed," Roger Clegg, general counsel for the Center for Equal Opportunity, told CNSNews.com.
"Unfortunately, there are a lot of organizations, and I don't think Jesse Jackson is the only example of this, but there are a lot of shakedowns that take place these days in the name of civil rights and diversity, and I think that's wrong," he added.
Ken Timmerman, contributing writer for WND, portrayed Jesse Jackson as a master manipulator in his book "Shakedown," which was based on ground-breaking interviews and government-released documents.
Timmerman describes Jackson as a compulsive liar who falsely claimed he was denied the chance to play quarterback at the University of Illinois because he was black, and erroneously announced on national television that Martin Luther King Jr. died in his arms.
Timmerman's book also details Jackson's methodology of objecting to billion-dollar corporate mergers, like that between Viacom and CBS, and subsequently scoring huge sums for his Rainbow/PUSH or Citizenship Education Fund.
"I've had a number of CEOs come to me and say paying Jesse Jackson $400,000 or $500,000 was the price of doing business," Timmerman told WND.
Prominent blacks aren't happy about Jackson's self-proclaimed crusade on their behalf.
As WorldNetDaily reported last week, a Los Angeles-based civil-rights group has scheduled its annual event aimed at diminishing Jackson's influence on the day Americans observe the accomplishments of Martin Luther King Jr. The Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny, or BOND, led by the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, will hold its fourth annual "National Day of Repudiation of Jesse Jackson" Monday in front of Jackson's Los Angeles headquarters.
"[Jackson] is out of control," Peterson said. "He has lost his moral authority to lead, and he is desperately trying to make himself relevant both on domestic and international affairs."
"We will hold this event every year until Jesse Jackson repents of his ways, and stops attempting to tear the races apart for his own personal gain," he said. "Dr. King is turning over in his grave seeing what his movement has become, thanks to people like Jesse Jackson."

What in Hell is this loon talking about?
Normally Jackson restricts himself to a buffoonish, illiterate misinterpretation of American history... Thoroughly wrongheaded but vaguely recognizable.
The statement above suggests that Jackson has either abandoned even a pretense of accuracy in his recitation of his people's history, or that he has genuinely lost the ability to remember what little he ever knew of it.
'Reparations'?
We'll get that check in the mail the day after your people reimburse us for the failed 'Great Society' and the 'War on Poverty'. Jacko.
And, given that this settling of accounts will leave us net-ahead of you, we're looking forward to the exchange.
Someone should comment upon the vast empty "territory" in the racial arsonist's skull.
Jesse is right about some things:
Black slaves did indeed build the wall on Wall Street for the Dutch
The Dutch however did allow Africans to own their own land until the slave revolt/uprising in 1641 in Niew Amsterdam (the original New York) and then stripped them of the privilege
The original slave market was where Wall St meets the East River
New York--by far--had the most slaves of any northern colony
Slavery was legal in NY State until 1827
IMHO, African Americans do not get nearly enough credit, in general, for what they brought to this country physically and culturally (this is NOT a call for reparations however.
So, the "Reverend" Jackson has dropped the pretense of using the term "African-American." Interesting.

What a load of absolute tripe. Jack-ass-son's career is what's "built on the backs of black people", and this race-baiting problem-profiteer knows it.
According to U.S. Census Records, in 1840 there were only 4 (four) slaves in the whole state of New York (and 50,027 "free colored"). In the same 1840 census there were 327,038 slaves and 8276 free colored in South Carolina. The highest reported number of slaves in New York, in census reports, was 25,333 in 1810; in that same 1810 census South Carolina reported 196,335 slaves. I am not going to bother trying to look up data for the cities of New York and Charleston, but Jesse is clearly wrong for 1840 and probably wrong for any year you would choose.
