Iraq: Baghdad would lay down the conditions of an exile of Saddam

Baghdad laid down the conditions of a possible departure in exile of the head of the Iraqi State Saddam Hussein, affirms Friday hebdomaire German DER Spiegel in its edition on line, quoting diplomatic sources in Dubaï and Cairo. A list of claims was given to Arab and Western diplomats, according to the magazine. It includes/understands the departure of the American soldiers of the area of the Gulf, the end of the mission of inspection in disarmament of UNO and the lifting of the sanctions against Iraq. For Baghdad, measures will have moreover to be taken against the production in Israel of weapons of massive destruction, according to DER Spiegel which affirms to hold its information of three diplomats, two Arabs and a Westerner. Lastly, the United States and Europe should commit themselves not continuing Saddam Hussein and its close relations in justice. A possible place of exile could be a African country, adds DER Spiegel, which does not give additional precise details on this point. Iraq vigorously contradicted insistent rumours of negotiations for the departure of its leader, which circulate since last week. (SCG)

BZZZZZTTT!!!

Wrong answer! You're the loser - you don't get to set terms, moron! Thanks for playing, but the delay tactics won't fly.

There's a storm coming...

How about Saddam and his sons leave in a box. Assuming we can find any pieces. American troops stay in the Gulf and we inspect with a fine tooth comb. All who agree raise their hand. The motion passes.

Utterly laughable. And one day after Saddam gave his defiant speech. No inspections? Right. As though. Sheesh!

No exile. Saddam should be taken or preferably killed. Would Hitler have been allowed to go into exile?

And for God's sake don't let Sheryl Crow get wind of this.

Nah, he's gonna go into exile as soon as anything serious happens (our first bombing run that takes out palaces, etc.) Ol' Saaddam knows the jig is up and bluffing won't work. He's gonna be outta there.

Iraq lays conditions for Saddam exile

By: AFP - January 17,2003

Berlin: Iraq has set out a list of conditions for the exile of President Saddam Hussein, including a complete withdrawal of US troops from the Gulf, Germany's Der Spiegel reported today quoting diplomatic sources.

It said the conditions also include ending UN weapons inspections and the sanctions regime, a pledge not to haul Saddam or his cronies before court and action to halt any Israeli development of weapons of mass destruction.

The newsweekly said its information came from a Western and two Arab diplomats in Dubai, adding that the Iraqi leader could go into exile in Africa.

But it said the United States had so far rejected the conditions and that Egypt was now trying to persuade Baghdad to compromise over its demands.

Arab diplomats in the region have already said that Turkey is working with Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries to convince Saddam Hussein to go into exile to prevent a US-led war.

Despite Arab and Turkish denials of having considered asking Saddam to step down and go abroad, the diplomats told AFP that such efforts were based on an initiative by Turkey, whose Prime Minister Abdullah Gul toured the region this month.

Speaking under cover of anonymity, they said the idea was that he would go into exile in return for assurances that he would not be prosecuted.

US President George W. Bush warned Tuesday that time was "running out" for Saddam.

This is like Saddam is singing this song himself...

Alice In Chains/Facelift - Man in the Box

I'm the man in the box
Buried in my #hit
Won't you come and save me, save me

CHORUS Skipped

I'm the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in #hit
Won't you come and save me, save me

You're probably right, but he has miscalculated so hugely in the past, I'm not sure. He may really think he can beat us in that "door to door" fighting around Baghdad.

He will have an exit strategy, and he will bolt and run when it is clear that he's going to get caught if he sticks around. But it won't be before a war has started.

With apologies to Marshall Mathers and doug from upland (who is far better at this than I), here is my parody take on the matter:

C'mon folks, we goin to the beach
Grab a couple of toys and let Dubya strap you in the car seat
Oh where's Saddam? He's takin a little nap in the trunk
Oh that smell (whew!) Dubya musta runned over a skunk
Now I know what you're thinkin - it's kind of late to go swimmin
But you know your Saddam, he's one of those type of men
that do crazy things, and if he don't get his way, he'll throw a fit
Don't play with Dubya's toy knife, honey, let go of it (no!)
And don't look so upset, why you actin bashful?
Don't you wanna help Dubya build a sand castle? (yeah!)
And Saddam said he wants to show how far he can float
And don't worry about that little boo-boo on his throat
It's just a little scratch - it don't hurt, he was eatin
dinner while you were sweepin and spilled ketchup on his shirt
Saddam's messy isn't he? We'll let him wash off in the water
and me and you can pway by ourselves, can't we?

You see folks.. there's a place called heaven and a place called hell
A place called prison and a place called jail
And Saddam's probably on his way to all of em except one
Cause Saddam's got new weapons and a buncha missles
And you don't want weapons do ya? (Nah)
Maybe when you're old enough to understand a little better
I'll explain it to ya
But for now we'll just say Saddam was real real bad
He was bein mean to Bush and made him real real mad
But I still feel sad that I put him on time-out

Wake up sweepy head we're here, before we pway
we're gonna take Saddam for a wittle walk along the pier
Baby, don't cry honey, don't get the wrong idea
Saddam's too sweepy to hear you screamin in his ear (Saddam!)
That's why you can't get him to wake, but don't worry
Dubya made a nice bed for Saddam at the bottom of the lake
Here, you wanna help Dubya tie a rope around this rock? (yeah!)
We'll tie it to his footsie then we'll roll him off the dock
Ready now, here we go, on the count of free..
One.. two.. free.. WHEEEEEE! (whoooooshhhhh)
There goes Saddam, spwashin in the wa-ta
No more fightin wit us, no more UN bullcrap
No more nuclear labs, no more bio-war
Blow him kisses bye-bye, tell Saddam you love him (Saddam!)
Now we'll go play in the sand, build a castle and junk
But first, just help Bush with two more things out the trunk

"...said its information came from a Western and two Arab diplomats..."

As reported yesterday, that (former) "western diplomat" is Richard Murphy, Saddam's errand boy and apologist/propagandist for Islamic terrorists.

"...He is really just dead meat."

After more than a decade of Saddam's bad faith, I'd say we're down to just one option. Negotiation is out of the question.

Would Hitler have been allowed to go into exile?

Exactly. Plus anybody who thinks Saddam is going to go lie on a beach somewhere and suck up mai-tais in his retirement is clearly delusional. He's always been a megalomaniac dictator, and he always will be; he's clever as a fox, and as long as he's alive, he'll be trouble.

He's dealing with the President of a country that elected Xlinton twice.

Perhaps he's just not up to speed on strategery.

But he hasn't lost yet.

And he doesn't think we will really fight.

Neither does NRO.

Bush has to prove Saddam wrong.

On the battlefield.

Soon.
