I'm feeling dumb here. Do we have a plane called the U2? I thought Gary Powers got shot down in one of those 40 years ago. Wasn't the U2 replaced by the SR-71? Are those still flying?

SR-71 is retired. U-2 is much cheaper to fly.

Gary Powers was shot down in a U2. We are still flying the U2. SR-71 has officially been retired. We do not....um....no, really we don't.....um ....have anything to take the place of the SR-71 Blackbird. Seriously, no we don't have anything to take the place of the SR-71, it was retired as soon as we came out with "stealth" technology, so we really don't have a thing. Nope. Not us. Unh-unh. No way. Not a thing. Nosireee. Not like when we came up with the SR-71 and didn't reveal it until it had been in use for several years.

No, Yes.

They have jazzed up the old U2, given it another designation, that I can't recall, and still fly them.

The SR71 came after the U2 but we never stopped using U2s. I believe we have retired the SR71. Too expensive and only really useful to spy on the Soviets as they were the only ones who could hit a U2. Also, we have more satellites now.

You are about three recon generations behind the power curve. The U2 was replaced with the TR-1 which is a U2 airframe but redesignated mostly because of the "fallout" from the Powers U2 shootdown. If you don't call it a U2 it must not be a U2.

The SR-71 has come and gone and returned and gone again as a replacement for the slower TR-1 which has now been redesignated as the U2 but is still here although re-engined.

Got it?

Tomorrow we'll discuss unmanned recon vehicles. Take notes.

No the U-2 was replaced with an updated version of itself called the TR-1. The SR-71 was designed for a completely different mission from what it had while it was still in use. The TR-1 is basically a big glider with a powerful engine. Last time I watched one take off, I could only see it for about 30 seconds until it was out of sight...heard it for another five minutes, though. The TR-1 is still in use by the military, the SR-71 has been officially retired from military use.
