This is not exactly a minor procedure... When performed immediately after the concussion it is quite simple: Drill a small hole in the skull, only topical anesthesia, and drain the blood and fluid; however, 30 days post-accident would likely mean significant clotted blood that might have to be vacuumed out.
What is it with skiing and politicians anyway?

What is the procedure for determining if someone as 'able to function' in the Senate? ... if they can fog a mirror
GREAT answer! ROFL ;^D

I caught that, and wondered why they left the date vague. Simply put, given his incoherence during the debate, I believe the Lautenberg family is lying about when the accident happened. When did the Senator fall, asks the reporter. Oh, about a month ago.
I don't ski, and I'm not from the West, but can't you ski the Rockies in October or earlier?
My grandmother didn't get that incoherent until she was 93.

My prayers to Loutenberg and his family that he recover fully and healthful Geeze, I am totally shamed. ~ Amen to your prayers.

Wasn't there talk of Lautenberg suffering from Alzheimer's before the election? Could this skiing accident be a cover story? Actually, it may be the other way around. His subdural hematoma may give him symptoms which may mimic early Alzheimer's.
Pinning down the exact cause of a chronic hematoma involves guess work. If there is an episode of head trauma that can be identified, that is usually assumed to be the causal event.
As with anything, it's not quite that simple. There are appearences on xray or at surgery that suggest if it is 6 hours, 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months or 6 years old, but you get the gist of it.

I agree.
I don't think I'd START skiing at 70 or 80, but it's like horseback riding in that the longer you've been at it and the better you get, the less energy you expend.
Where a beginner huffs and puffs and falls down a lot, somebody who's been skiing for years just glides and turns, glides and turns. It really takes very little effort because gravity is doing most of the work. As long as you don't try to get fancy . . .

FYI
I smell a RAT! A democRAT.
Never, never, no never trust 'em. This was predicted.
When the Torch was unelectable, Lautenberg was resurrected in an illegal substitution. We, in the Free Republic predicted that something would happen to him, he'll resign and the RAT governor would appoint the Torch or someone equally reprehensible. Just wait.

I once took a ski lesson from a guy that was in his late 70's. He was like a drill sergeant!
Boy, was he a good skiier. He didn't have much patience as an instructor, though. He skied backwards down the run, watching me and hollering at me for leaning uphill. Geez was I glad when that lesson was over. I think he was too...

Obviously you aren't familiar with Lautenberg's record. I'm familiar with his record and I won't be joining you in wishing him a full recovery. If only the good die young Lautenberg will live for at least another 200 years.

Isn't it awful that our trust in the Dems is low that one would consider this his "way out". However, I'm sure his doctor will issue just such a report.
Reminds you just a little of Ted Kennedy and the "accident" that got rid of a "problem".
