Whilst perusing the local rag here, I came across an article stating that a settlement between the recording business and consumers had been reached, but alas, few folks are taking advantage of it!
You are limited to how much you can claim per person ($20), or if I recall, $80 per family...
Go to http://www.musiccdsettlement.com
Don't ever say I didn't give ya something!

Thanks for linking that!
Be advised the settlement covers CD's, vinyl etc, bought between 01/01/95 through 12/22/2000.
They WILL ask for D.O.B. and last 4 digits of your S.S.A.N.
This IS a legit site and offer!

If your spouse and kids also bought CDs on their own during this period, they can file a claim as well. One does not have to be 18 in order to file a claim. Also, you can claim on behalf of any deceased relatives but be prepared to back it up with a death certificate.

Hmmm... here's something interesting:
1. The amount you will be paid will be based on the total number of claims filed, up to a maximum of $20 per claimant. Please note, however, that if the number of claims filed result in awards of less than $5, the Settlement Fund will revert to Cy Pres distribution. Cy Pres distribution means all Settlement Funds would be distributed to not-for-profit corporations and/or charitable organizations and/or governmental or public entities within your state, to be used for music-related purposes or programs. For more information on this, please see the Notice of Proposed Settlement.
Sooo... don't tell TOO many people about this!

So if one person sends in receipts from only one disk, meaning that person's reward should be less than $5, does that mean all of the awards effectively get nixed?

No. Since they didn't ask for any substantiation of our claims when we filled out the form, apparently it's just a straight divvying up of the payout pool among however many people fill out the form.
I didn't even notice any checkbox or some way to swear that we did in fact buy a CD during the time period!

hmmm sounds like a nice way to get e-mail lists and mailing lists.
Does Bill Gates pop up on your computer and give you the secret magic cookie recipe if you forward this to 10 others (this REALLY WORKS!!!)
