I never realized Free Republic was that high up in the rankings. There are hundreds of thousands of websites out there but only 1250 websites get more hits than Free Republic! When you consider the millions of dollars being poured into websites such as Amazon.com, Google, Yahoo! and WIRED, you gain an appreciation for the enormity of this achievement.
A review of DU shows a very open forum, allowing (and perhaps encouraging) incredibly vulgar language. The users of Freerepublic.com are held to strict limits on vulgar language, and freerepublics posters generally have a sharp sense of humor and fun.
For all the crap Free Republic gets for its moderators and so-called "censorship", we can all be thankful that we are not the cesspool that is DU. And that's just what this website would become if we didn't police it.

Thank you for the kind comments. Some try to paint us as something we are not. We make mistakes sometimes, and sometimes we are just plain wrong, but I think we do a good job of keeping those to a minimum.

I agree. Also, I tried to post on DU and was banned after only 5 posts. I never used vulgar language, never made a personal attack, never attacked the leftist ideology. All I did was question why they love Castro. This led to an immediate banning. I don't think FR comes minutely close to the censorship seen on the left. There is actual debate on this site, but none on DU.

Policing crude behavior and purging differing opinions are very different things.
