Sarandon plans to act up before State of the Union
New York Daily News ^ | 1/28/03 | Kenneth R. Bazinet

WASHINGTON - Just before President Bush delivers his State of the Union address tonight, activist actress Susan Sarandon plans to upstage him.

"Before our kids start coming home from Iraq in body bags and women and children start dying in Baghdad, I need to know, 'What did Iraq do to us?'" the 56-year-old New Yorker asks in a 30-second television spot that will air just before the 9 p.m. speech.

Edward Peck, a former ambassador to Iraq, tells her in the bit: "The answer is nothing. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, nothing to do with Al Qaeda. ... Invading Iraq will increase terrorism, not reduce it."

The White House has signaled it may soon lay out evidence proving him wrong.

The spot is being paid for by an anti-war group called True Majority, run by Ben Cohen of Ben & Jerry's ice cream fame. It urges Bush to seek a peaceful resolution and to allow the inspections to continue.

Oh, but they're not "working together", so we shouldn't paint them with the same brush. What could all these diverse and disparate groups have in common? Oh yeah, the war...right...< /sarc >

over-the-hill former sexpots-turned-activists

Some activists are fine but the former sexpots trying to become relevant because they looked in the mirror and realized their sexpot days were over just need to quit. I'm glad the former sexpots are on the other side because who needs old bimbos?

Maybe she's hoping to get noticed by the Hollyweird bigwigs who might toss some more B movie work her way.

So sad, too. She used to be an actress. Her next role will be 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" or "Sunset Boulevard". That's where all the actresses get beached. LOL

I cannot believe how misguided and uneducated the Hollywood crowd is.

I can't believe how misguided and uneducated the Democratic leadership can be. See here for the latest example.

I thought as much - after all there are now Ben & Jerry's advertisements in London. I thought that kind of blatant commercialism was something those people eschewed.

'What did Iraq do to us?'" the 56-year-old New Yorker asks ...

Good question. For starters, Saddam prodded them to cheer and celebrate 9-11. More importantly, Saddam acquired the West Nile Virus just prior to its arrival here. Even more importantly, he's very similar to Hitler, the way he attempts to invade other countries and terrorises his own people by gassing them.

They didn't have a problem with Bill Clinton killing people in Kosovo, but...

From the Not In Our Name call: "We refuse to allow President Bush to speak for all the people living in this country. We will not give up our right to question. We will not hand over our consciences in return for a hollow promise of safety. We acknowledge that we in this country have a special responsibility to resist what our own government is doing, from military interventions to supplying arms used to shoot down and terrorize people from Palestine to the Philippines. Together as one we say "NOT IN OUR NAME."

Not In Our Name: The Pledge to Resist

We believe that as people living
in the United States it is our
responsibility to resist the injustices
done by our government, in our names

Not in our name
will you wage endless war
there can be no more deaths
no more transfusions of blood for oil

Not in our name
will you invade countries
bomb civilians, kill more children
letting history take its course
over the graves of the nameless

Not in our name
will you erode the very freedoms
you have claimed to fight for

Not by our hands
will we supply weapons and funding
for the annihilation of families
on foreign soil

Not by our mouths
will we let fear silence us

Not by our hearts
will we allow whole peoples
or countries to be deemed
evil

Not by our will
and Not in our name

We pledge resistance
We pledge alliance with those
who have come under attack
for voicing opposition to the war
or for their religion or ethnicity

We pledge to make common cause
with the people of the world
to bring about justice freedom and peace

Another world is possible
and we pledge to make it real

I'm sure it never occurred to this self-absorbed bit-h what Iraq has been doing to it's own citizens for the last decade.

When the truth is revealed regarding Iraq, I hope Bush affixes the names of the Hollywierd fruitcakes that opposed the war.

This should be the knockout blow of the century for such individuals. Never again should their voices be lent the slightest tinge of credibility.
