MURRAY, Ky. (AP) - A college student was convicted of second-degree manslaughter in the death of her newborn daughter, who was found stuffed in a plastic bag in a dormitory room trash can.
A Circuit Court jury issued the verdict Tuesday night against Angelita Turner, who had been on trial for the second time on a murder charge. The jury also had the option of convicting Turner of reckless homicide but decided on the middle charge, manslaughter.
The jury recommended a sentence of 10 years for the 23-year-old Murray State University student. Sentencing was set for March 10. With credit for time already served, Turner could be eligible for probation within three months.
A September murder trial resulted in a mistrial when the jury could not reach a verdict.
Prosecutor Gail Cook argued during the five-day trial that Turner planned the infant's death by concealing her pregnancy and refusing prenatal care.
Turner's attorney, Tom Glover, said the medical evidence showed the infant was stillborn, disputing the prosecution's contention that there was evidence that the little girl took a breath.
The infant's body was found in Turner's dormitory room in March 2001, after a hospital worker treated Turner and became suspicious that she had delivered a baby.

40 Million+ babies murdered legally since Roe V Wade
Is it any wonder kids have little respect for the lives of their own?

Every time I read one of these horrible stories, I can't believe that anyone would rather leave their newborn to die instead of simply taking it to a hospital, fire station, or church and saying "I can't deal with this baby, can you help me?" HOW HARD IS THAT? Are these girls so stupid or naive that they'd be willing to carry a baby to full term just to murder it upon birth? Why did they not get an abortion? Not that I sanction that heinous action at all, but you wonder why they decide that murder after birth is preferable to murder before birth - especially since they'll get jail time for the former and not the latter.
It's really incomprehensible to me how this happens time and time and time again. I guess stupidity knows no boundaries.

What's the big deal? It's just a full-birth abortion. She exercised her right to choose.

I'm betting that most of these cases are pure denial. Deep down she knows she's pregnant, but she can't emotionally deal with the situation and chooses to ignore it instead. Later on when confronted with the baby in her hands, she ditches the evidence and again goes back into ignore mode rather than face the truth.

Let's hope this judge is not a relative of the scumbag judge in Massachussets who let the murdering beast Louise Woodward out with time served when clearly a 5-year minimum sentence was called for.

I have to agree, if she was a Dr. she'd be free, even encouraged to murder babies all day every day. It's a choice, not a murder.

I don't understand the problem, here. She was just exercising her sacred right to choose a complete-birth abortion. We should be applauding the wonderful reproductive freedoms and abortion rights guaranteed by the US Constitution.
