If you are anywhere near the debris track, don't touch any of it! Not only should it be best preserved for evidence, we have NO IDEA what was on board. We know about the scientific experiements, but it is routine to do classified projects on the shuttle. If there were bacteria, etc., one would hope that it was "autoclaved" on the way down, but at this point we can't be sure.

Many rocket fuels are toxic agents similar to nerve agents.

Don't touch any debris, call the authorities.
