3 PM Prayers for the Crew of Columbia, their families, and the USA - ALL INVITED TO PRAY
divinemercy ^ | J+M+J the First of February A.D. 2003 | Siobhan O'Halloran

Posted on 02/01/2003 9:35:19 AM PST by Siobhan

Calling all praying Freepers. Today at 3 PM let's all offer special prayers for the crew of Columbia, their families and friends, the NASA staff, our President, and for the USA.

As a Roman Catholic, 3 pm is known as the Hour of Divine Mercy, the hour at which Our Lord Jesus Christ died on the Cross for the salvation of the world. We have a special form of prayer called the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. This form of devotional prayer can be found on the internet HERE

Whatever your particular background, let's join in prayer at 3 pm in whatever manner you wish to pray.

Eternal Father,
I offer you the Body and Blood,
Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son,
Our Lord, Jesus Christ,
in atonement for our sins
and those of the whole world.

For the sake of His sorrowful Passion,
have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Holy God,
Holy Mighty One,
Holy Immortal One,
have mercy on us
and on the whole world.

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion -- inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

3 pm wherever you are or 3 pm Central - I leave that to folks' discretion. Overlapping hours of prayer may be just exactly what we need today.

It increasingly appears that prayers for the repose of the souls of the crew are necessary. :-(

Dies irae, dies illa,
Solvet saeclum in favilla:
Teste David cum Sybilla.
Quantus tremor est futurus,
Quando Judex est venturus,
Cuncta stricte discussurus!
Tuba, mirum spargens sonum,
Per sepulcra regionum.
Coget omnes ante thronum,
Mors stupebit, et natura,
Cum resurget creatura.
Judicanti responsura.
Liber scriptus proferetur.
In quo totum continetur,
Unde mundus judicetur.
Judex ergo cum sedebit.
Quidquid latet, apparebit:
Nil inultum remanebit.
Quid sum miser tune dicturus?
Quem patronem rogaturus,
Cum vix justus sit securus?
Rex tremendae majestatis,
Qui salvandos salvas gratis,
Salva me, fons pietatis,
Recordare, Jesu pie.
Quod sum causa tuae viae:
Ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me, sedisti lassus:
Redemisti, crucem passus:
Tantus labor non sit cassus.
Juste Judex ultionis.
Donum fac remissionis,
Ante diem rationis.
Ingemisco tamquam reus:
Culpa rubet vultus meus:
Supplicanti parce, Deus.
Qui Mariam absolvisti.
Et latronem exaudisti,
Mihi quoque spem dedisti,
Preces meae non sunt dignae;
Sed tu bonus fac benigne,
ne perenni cremer igne.
Inter oves locum praesta,
Et ab haedis me sequestra.
Statuens in parte dextra.
Confutatis maledictis,
Flammis acribus addictis,
Voca me cum benedictis.
Oro supplex et acclinis.
Cor contitum quasi cinis,
Gere curam mei finis.
Lacrymosa dies illa,
Qua resurget ex favilla.
Judicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo, parce Deus:
Pie Jesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem.
Amen.

Day of wrath and doom impending,
David's word with Sibyl's blending,
Heaven and earth in ashes ending.
O what fear man's bosom rendeth,
When from heaven the Judge descendeth,
On whose sentence all dependeth.
Wondrous sound the trumpet flingeth,
Through earth's sepulchres it ringeth,
All before the throne it bringeth.
Death is struck, and nature quaking,
All creation is awaking,
To its Judge an answer making.
Lo, the book exactly worded,
Wherein all hath been recorded,
Thence shall judgment be awarded.
When the Judge His seat attaineth,
And each hidden deed arraigneth,
Nothing unavenged remaineth.
What shall I, frail man, be pleading?
Who for me be interceding
When the just are mercy needing?
King of majesty tremendous,
Who dost free salvation send us,
Fount of pity, then befriend us.
Think, kind Jesus, my salvation
Caused Thy wondrous Incarnation,
Leave me not to reprobation.
Faint and weary Thou hast sought me,
On the Cross of suffering bought me,
Shall such grace be vainly brought me?
Righteous Judge, for sin's pollution
Grant Thy gift of absolution,
Ere that day of retribution.
Guilty now I pour my moaning,
All my shame with anguish owning.
Spare, O God, Thy suppliant groaning.
Through the sinful woman shriven,
Through the dying thief forgiven,
Thou to me a hope hast given.
Worthless are my prayers and sighings,
Yet, good Lord, in grace complying,
Rescue me from fires undying.
With Thy sheep a place provide me,
From the goats afar divide me,
To Thy right hand do Thou guide me.
When the wicked are confounded,
Doomed to flames of woe unbounded,
Call me with Thy Saints surrounded.
Low I kneel with heart's submission,
See, like ashes, my contrition,
Help me in my last condition.
Ah! that day of tears and mourning,
From the dust of earth returning,
Man for judgment must prepare him,
Spare, O God, in mercy spare him.
Lord, all-pitying, Jesus blest,
Grant them Thine eternal rest.
Amen.

TRANSLATION OF KADDISH

May the great Name of God be exalted and sanctified, throughout the world, which he has created according to his will. May his Kingship be established in your lifetime and in your days, and in the lifetime of the entire household of Israel, swiftly and in the near future; and say, Amen.
May his great name be blessed, forever and ever.
Blessed, praised, glorified, exalted, extolled, honored elevated and lauded be the Name of the holy one, Blessed is he- above and beyond any blessings and hymns, Praises and consolations which are uttered in the world; and say Amen. May there be abundant peace from Heaven, and life, upon us and upon all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who makes peace in his high holy places, may he bring peace upon us, and upon all Israel; and say Amen.

Lord, please grant these brave men and women eternal rest and peace. Keep their families and loved ones left behind on earth and comfort them in their pain as their worst fears - those of many years and countless flight and flight test hours - are realized. May we, as a nation, your people, take them to our collective hearts and may they not want save to be reunited with you and their loved ones in Heaven.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Central would also seem appropriate because Mission Control in Houston also runs on Central time. However, does anyone know if the shuttle itself ran on Central or Zulu?(aka Greenich Mean Time, aka Universal Time)

The Soviets tried to fly an STS named Buran ("Blizzard"). It made one unmanned flight before being scrapped.

Perhaps flying souped up V-2 rockets is cheaper, but there are no R&D "spin-offs" to benefit the nation as a whole.

The loss of Columbia may end up being due to an "act of God" such as meteor or space debries damage, something that could not have been prevented, but the shuttles are getting long in the tooth. NASA needed to have the STS replacement in the pipeline after Challenger. Something 100% innovative and daring. Like America.

Houston time. Everything is based on Mission Control. Usually, for takeoff they used Cape time. But I don't know which time zone they're talking about for the prayer service.

This is awful. And it's not just the astronauts. Those families go through so much, from the days of flight school and testpilot school (in the old days) on. It never ends.

I just signed up today, after years of lurking, and I can't think of a better time. What a horrible tragedy, and what's worse - I am already hearing the politicizing of this - 'budget was cut', etc. I guess there's no end to the sickening liberal power plays. I hope I'm wrong, and that we can all pull this together and pray for the victims instead of using this as another 'wellstone' moment for the Dems. Anyway, I made the plunge today to join; I feel i know a lot of you already. Hope I can join in these lively discussions and contribute. A sad day for all. Added sympathy points for me - I'm in California! ;)

The shuttles were built with 100 flights in mind. Columbia was on 26. It wasn't age exactly.

I asked my dad, a retired aerospace loads engineer (static, not dynamic) and he said, yes, the vibrations and flutter, especially at 207,000 feet, with a small crack not detected in inspection, could potentially do it. But who knows. They're talking insulation and tire pressure, but they won't figure it out until all the data is put together.

it's amazing they fly as often as they do, since they undergo tremendous stress loads ... I've heard there was something on liftoff (possible icing damage) ... I've also heard there was no EVA to inspect the vehicle ... I would hope this isn't true ...

Pastor, it blew up right over us. I was outside and momentarily the sky got brighter and thought what a bright morning it was, not noting anything as my back was to the shuttle.

I came indoors and was working on a switch when the massive explosion hit rattling the windows, followed with a bizarre rumbling, again shaking the walls and windows. This was 5 after eight according to my clock. (Oddly, that switch started working, no joking!)

Wondering about my wife I called her and she hadn't heard anything, so I finished the repair and began listening for sirens to give me a clue what happened and where.

Forty-five minutes later I clicked on the internet then to Free Republic and read where this had happened and thought this was a perverted thread on here, but in reading where and what time, I was aghast!

Mercy upon their souls and families--and this nation and Israel. Obviously I'm writing from the Dallas area, and three of the crew was from Texas, with a real irony being that they are finding debris not too far from where the lady from India graduated from college. God bless us all on this day.

I wonder why the loud explosion if there was no fuel on board? I thought they jettisoned that once they hit glide path before reentry?

How loud was the explosion you heard?

Our prayers are with you and your counties as you sort this out.

There was some fuel aboard, the media is saying. Being ex-military, IMHO, this was a loud explosion, not a sonic boom, as the shuttles fly over our home and I've never heard any sonic booms. The sound shook our walls and windows, and was "deep," if that makes sense.

The rumbling, or roaring as someone on tv described it was prolonged, maybe for two seconds. That, too, shook things. Nor did the rumbling taper, as when one hears thunder; it just quit.

My perspective is that this literaly happened just in front of my front porch, had I been watching.

I would have been about 38 miles away from you, but straight up with no barrier to sound in between. I'm still wondering about the amount of sound associated with what they're now saying would have been a small amount of fuel remaining.

Wonder if they had other kinds of gases in tanks/cylinders on board?

In any case, condolences to the families.

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

High Flight was composed by Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr., an American serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was born in Shanghai, China in 1922, the son of missionary parents, Reverend and Mrs. John Gillespie Magee; his father was an American and his mother was originally a British citizen.

He came to the U.S. in 1939 and earned a scholarship to Yale, but in September 1940 he enlisted in the RCAF and was graduated as a pilot. He was sent to England for combat duty in July 1941.

In August or September 1941, Pilot Officer Magee composed High Flight and sent a copy to his parents. Several months later, on December 11, 1941 his Spitfire collided with another plane over England and Magee, only 19 years of age, crashed to his death.

His remains are buried in the churchyard cemetery at Scopwick, Lincolnshire.

Thanks for the reminder of the recent Black Hawk crash.

As a Canadian who supports the War on Terror, I also remember the Friendly Fire accident and pray for all the soldiers and families who've been affected - both my countrymen and the Americans.

7 children lost a parent today and 7 died in this disaster.

Prayers go out to God for these lives lost and those left behind.

....

Here are brief profiles of the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia.

Shuttle Commander Rick Douglas Husband, a U.S. Air Force colonel and former test pilot, was on his second shuttle mission, having flown previously in 1999 aboard shuttle Discovery.

Born July 12, 1957, in Amarillo, Texas, and married with two children, Husband joined the astronaut program in 1994 and worked as chief of safety for NASA's Astronaut Office.

His previous shuttle voyage was a 10-day mission that docked with the International Space Station and delivered supplies in preparation for the arrival of the first crew to live aboard the orbiting outpost.

He piloted that flight, logging 235 hours, 13 minutes in space.

---

Shuttle Pilot William C. McCool, a U.S. Navy commander, was on his first shuttle voyage aboard Columbia, but had wide experience as a military aircraft pilot with more than 2,800 hours of flight experience in 24 aircraft.

A test pilot at the Strike Aircraft Test Directorate at Patuxent River, Maryland, McCool managed projects ranging from airframe fatigue life studies to avionics upgrades. He acted as test pilot of the EA-6B Prowler, a radar-jamming warplane.

His primary efforts, however, were dedicated to dedicated to flight test of the Advanced Capability (ADVCAP) EA-6B.

Married, McCool was born Sept. 23, 1961, in San Diego, California.

---

Shuttle Payload Commander Michael Anderson, a U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, was responsible for science hardware aboard Columbia.

Anderson joined the astronaut corps in 1994 and previously flew aboard shuttle Endeavour in 1998, the eighth docking mission between a space shuttle and the Soviet-made Mir spacecraft. Anderson logged over 211 hours in space on that voyage.

Born in Plattsburgh, New York, on Dec. 25, 1959, Anderson counted Spokane, Washington, as his hometown. He was married.

---

Ilan Ramon, an Israeli Air Force colonel, was the first Israeli to go into space.
