Good god man. You should have borrowed a shirt, tie and jacket from someone. A red polo shirt?

I doubt when he dressed this morning he was expecting to appear on a nationwide broadcast -- it's likely he hasn't even considered what he is wearing -- these people have to be in complete shock

Just to be accurate, prez notified immediately after scheduled landing time at 9:16 EST. Probably waited on the off chance it was simply a loss of comm (my speculation).

I remember the day Kennedy was shot. Walter Chronkite says that some woman called into CBS to complain he wasn't in a tie & coat. What he's wearing is irrelevant.

Thanks for the flag. FOX says the vehicle was travelling at Mach 18 at the time.

Still waiting on more info on the wheel-well temp or tire pressure, etc.

Recall on STS-1 when a number of tiles popped off at launch? The Air Force used some special cameras in Hawaii to look at the bottom of the shuttle. I wonder if they did that this time?

(The Columbia does not carry an RMS [the robot arm] with a camera on SpaceLab missions.)

This just serves as a graphic reminder that NASA is not involved in fun and games. The things they do involve life and death.

Perhaps that freeper meant Wearing a coat and tie used to be a sign of respect or remorse in a situation like this. They could have been prepared with coat and tie ready for a situation like this.

I am so sick of freepers around here having to correct every little thing that someone posts with their own personal feelings. It is not irrelevant to that poster. to you perhaps but who asked for your thoughts on it? Please people stop looking for a fight on every thread.

I hope that they can find the reason why Columbia broke up, but right now I'm in mourning for the seven astronauts who died today.

I was devastated after Challenger and I'm devastated now.

Our homeschooling group is taking a trip to KSC next month and will visit with the astronauts. I think that trip may have more impact on them after today.

Too easily people get lulled into thinking that technology is routine. With efforts as complex as this, you always walk shoulder-to-shoulder with disaster.

Tough are the soles that tread the knife's edge.

In times like these some people need to joke around to relieve the tension, others get terribly serious. In a group as big as this the two are bound to meet up.

Let's give everyone a break today....

I had told my hubby that I had hoped we would've been able to take our vacation when the Columbia took off or when it landed. If I was at the Cape today waiting for the landing, I would've been destroyed.

It has already been taken off Ebay. I had already thought about that possibility, and I said to someone if that happens, I hope they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. It's like selling parts of a coffin.

Fox has significantly enhanced the video. At the large magnification they are using it is truely horrific, you can see dozens of pieces being shed, multiple explosions, pieces burning up and disapearing. Just horrible.
