Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance

Sat February 1, 2003 02:08 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans. "We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.

"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.

Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.

"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said.

In a couple of weeks, maybe a little longer, I will be happy to see Baghdad broken up. Preferably in a large fireball.

What would you expect them so say?

Is their interpreting their vision of God's will much different from Falwell's 9/11 vision?

I'd say not much.

I can't speak for God, but it is troubling the connection of the first Israeli astronaut on board. The Israel/American connection seems to always bring tradegy for us. We do have enemies in high places.

Yep, I knew this would happen. Just waiting to see pictures of them celebrating out in the streets.

I also have to wonder if the Palistinians celebrate in the streets if this would escalate the tensions between them and Israel since one of the astronauts was an Israeli.

Not a brilliant display of intelligence to be dancing in the streets during such time.

A good question: Did Saddam Hussein have a hand in sabotaging the Space Shuttle?

You think murderous thugs who kill innocent children are speaking for GOD!!!!! Did God build the shuttle? Did he leave a bolt off, or something? Did God REWARD the murderous thug Muslims with this, and thumb His nose at the Christian Bush?...it is silly, and even dangerouse to assert that God had anything to do with this...the "enemies" are about to know that God's protection is NOT on the Muslim lying scum who celebrate everytimg an American dies.

Roll the cameras! Get the cheering Iraqis and whoever else cares to gloat on television ASAP. Put their comments on 'bold' and make headlines. Let's stop beating around the bush here.

Americans simply don't cheer when innocent civilians meet with tragedy, even if they are from a country that opposes us. Says a lot, I think.

What makes you think the enemy is in the high places?
