7th segment in the broadcast -- they are labeled alphabetically -- A-B-C-D-E-F-G

So "Special Report" is one of the blocks and "Big Story" is another block? Or is Shepard Smith's segment split up into all those blocks? I've never heard the other letters mentioned in blocks. Thanks for the reply :-)

he was just reading straight off the wire

Boy, does that take me back to my radio days! I had to do a live 15-minute newscast weekdays, amongst many other things in that small station. Often I would cobble together wire copy with scant minutes before airtime and sort of read on autopilot. Once in awhile you'd be cooly reading along and hit something like, "PRESIDENT REAGAN SAID THURSDAY HE WAS MOSTLY ENCOURAGED WITH THE RECEPTION HIS ECONOMIC PLAN IS RECEI4995-090328299499059069050-3-=2=2=22=2."

You did what you could.

Reading on autopilot is sort of par for the radio course, which is why it has been a radio station prank since time immemorial to place inside the copy stack a story which begins something like "GEORGE WASHINGTON SAID TODAY HE IS PLEASED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS TROOPS AT VALLEY FORGE..."

Hmm...All this has me reminiscing about other very satisfying pranks from radio days...But y'all get the idea.

I also saw his later apology and complete embarrassment but there was no mention about his source.

That's good to know. I'm glad he didn't attempt to place the blame elsewhere as was suggested here in other posts.

yes, he wouldn't dare to call the President, since he knows the call wouldn't be answered.

Chawla's gaff occured on a previous space shuttle mission. Aparently, as others on this thread have indicated, she caused a problem with a satelite they were launching and a space walk was required to correct her mistake.

Nice of Shep to apologize for reading the scoop before he had a chance to really understand what was being said. However, I listened to quite a bit of coverage on CBS radio in the late morning/early afternoon and their announcer informed the audience of Chawla's gaff on the previous mission as well. Since I didn't see Shep mention it, I really can't comment the propriety of his report. However, on CBS radio, the information was presented rather matter-of-factly in a running commentary summarizing the days events. The information regarding Chawla was not presented as a news item in and of itself. It was somewhat discomforting to hear this report about one of the astronauts who was killed in today's accidents, but the CBS announcer also made it clear that it was on a previous mission and didn't necessarily reflect badly on Chawla, afterall, she was given a further assignment/mission, so NASA must not have felt the mistake was that big of a deal.

Stuff happens when events occur and media outlets race to get information to the public. It's not like the public should not know of this information (i.e., the Chawla gaff on the previous mission), it's just that maybe today is not the day to publicize this information. Like I said, it was nice of Shep to apologize, but he should have saved himself the embarassment by taking a bit of extra time to think about what he is saying on national tv. I like Shep, but sometimes he gets too excited and gets carried away in the moment, and makes mistakes for which he feels compelled to apologize for later (e.g., this info on Chawla, and the J-blow incident). On the other hand, on many stories (like the apprehension of the DC snipers for example) Shep handles the job like a real pro as good as any network. I like Shep because he has a different style of delivery than most TV news people - it's a refreshing change.

Welcome, member of 21 days. Nice try on the Fox bashing. Perhaps you should tune out of here, too?

I'll borrow a line from justshe because it seems to fit here...

Give it a break.....or take it up with the owner of the forum if you have a gripe.

Both, maybe? I think Shep's program is broken into 7 different segments, and he's on at 7:00 PM eastern.

Whatever...

Like you and others have said, I heard that comment and thought, "Did I really hear that?".

I am glad to know he mentioned it later as a mistake.

I recognize prejudice when I see it.

btw, pointing to a member's length of membership only serves to emphasize that the one presenting the irrelevant information has no defensible position or lacks confidence in their position. This is an ad hominem attack.

Somebody did something with this story, AP says its from A NASA link here at NASA: http:/www.jsc.nasa.gov/bios. That link is dead. The one I found from AP at around 2 never said what post 36 said. Either Ap feed this out altered and later when caught took it out or nasa did have that as the bio and after the tragedy took down the page. I think AP was playing their games again. I bet Fox raised heck over it.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that I bet Kalpana Chawla doesn't fit the "conservative" profile.

If I may generalize, if you knew citizens of India, you may be surprised. They are a good people, and share many philosophies with us. Hard working, intelligent, industrious, and high achievers.
