At this point in the mission, she was basically a passenger.

Heck, at this point in the mission, she was basically cargo. It's virtually inconceivable that anything she'd done on any previous mission had any relevance whatsoever. The comment was unnecessary, inappropriate and cruel, and I (and many others) recognized it as such at the time. And, based on what he said later, so did Smith...

Judging from the responses about this on this very forum today, I was beginning to think she might have been the first person EVER to make a mistake at NASA.
