Did NASA know there was a problem? PIC and Excerpts from an Israeli Article
Maariv ^

The left wing of the shuttle picture taken from the window of the shuttle.
Main Issue in the Article
Did Nasa know about this and therefore kept their silence, not telling the astronauts?
-The photo was revealed on Channel 1 of Israel. This pic was taken during an interview the Channel had with the Israeli astronaut.

"Overlooked" as in missed, or "overlooked" as in ignored?

I believe such damage might be overlooked, but I can't buy into this "conspiracy" thing hereThe photo in the paper is NOT the wing on the Columbia. Someone made a mistake, or it is deliberate misinformation. The wing on the Columbia is white, grey and black.

When the fact is no one knows for sure yet what happened. When has that stopped anybody, even on this forum? :-)

During the STS-87 mission, there was a change made on the external tank. Because of NASA's goal to use environmentally friendly products, a new method of "foaming" the external tank had been used for this mission and the STS-86 mission. It is suspected that large amounts of foam separated from the external tank and impacted the orbiter. This caused significant damage to the protective tiles of the orbiter. Foam cause damage to a ceramic tile?! That seems unlikely, however when that foam is combined with a flight velocity between speeds of MACH two to MACH four, it becomes a projectile with incredible damage potential.
____________________________________________________________
According to NASA, during several previous Space Shuttle flights, including the shuttle launched Nov. 29, 1998, the shuttle external tank experienced a significant loss of foam from the intertank. The material lost caused damage to the thermal protection high-temperature tiles on the lower surface of the shuttle orbiter.

Overlooked..
And, (as Abner points out) I am not even convinced this thing is a wing.
The whole thing is just fishy..

Maybe that's why mission control played a
famous bagpipe funeral march song on the last day of the shuttle's orbit. Rather strange taste in music, unless you knew something.
Flight Day 17 Red Team STS-107 crew wake up call, Flight Day 17, Red Team - "Scotland the Brave" by The Black Watch and the band of the 51st Highland Brigade...
And also gospel music:
Flight Day 17 Blue Team STS-107 crew wake up call, Flight Day 17, Blue Team - "If You've Been Delivered" by Kirk Franklin

Rather strange taste in music, unless you knew something. One of the female astronauts liked bagpipe music...THAT is why it was chosen.

I don't believe you can see very much of the top of the wing and certainly none of the bottom of the wing from any of the windows. Looks like a shot of the inside of the open payload pay doors taken from the payload bay windows that face aft.

The Maariv photo has been retouched! The real photo has been revealed by secret sources!!!

Looks like a shot of the inside of the open payload pay doors taken from the payload bay windows that face aft. I doubt it. It is too yellow, and every photo I have seen of the shuttle has been very clear. This photo is too fuzzy.

Oh yeah right, a Scottish funeral march tune is always a winner.
Bet they like waking up to the Air Force Dirge too.
