Amusing Salon Deathwatch Sidenote: Remember how they'd started that "day pass" thing where you get access to Salon Premium for one day after watching an ad for Mercedes or some other advertiser? Well, today the ad you have to watch is for The Well, an online community owned by Salon. They've already run out of real advertisers! Bwa-ha!

CPAC has lost its roots. Modern "conservatism" has very little in common with traditional conservatism. The most obvious example of this truth is the modern "conservative" impulse to glorify the warfare state even as it denounces the welfare state. Traditional conservatism practiced by the likes of John Flynn, detested anything that empowered that state - whether it be war or welfare.

Traditional conservatism entailed love of country, and distrust, not hatred of the state.
When at war with an enemy trying to destroy us, we should stand by our countrymen and crticise our government when it errs. We should not seek to actively undermine it.

Someone inform Mr. Flynn that we were attacked and one third of Manhattan was destroyed. The current conflict is not an exercise in empire building but of defense.

One panel asked, "Islam, Religion of Peace?" (Short answer: no.)And this is somehow wrong ... why, exactly? Oh, that's right Michelle, you can't answer the question. Of course.

Leftists simply don't get it. When they picked a fight with American conservatism, when they made the all out attempt to decimate the American culture, they started a war. If we do anything, it will be to end this war the only way we can permit it to: Running all of the Leftists, who are open enemies of this nation, into the oceans.
There is no peace without victory. We will have our peace.

The thing that Goldberg doesn't want to do is to traipse over to DU and see how many leftists hate not only conservatives, but the very idea of America itself.
One of the little examples of intellectual sleight of hand is to cite one man's explanation of the Paranoid Style of American Politics and tar the entire conservative movement as slightly off its rocker.
Liberals have been using this cheap trick for some time, and it is good that people like Coulter are around to give the libs a well-deserved kick in the scrotum.
What liberals despise is the fact that conservatism is an unapologetically dynamic political movement grounded in the permanence of the human condition. It's not some candyland ideology placed in the service of a Long March to the Radiant Future as liberalism is.
This article was as cheap as it was long. Salon.com cannot die too soon.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

The most important messages that the libs should take home from this article are:
1. Conservatism is alive and well in our youth (43% of attendees were college students)
2. Gene really is jovial and fit--the article description sounded more like Santa Claus.

Thanks for the ping... it's always amusing to see one of these hysterical, hand-wringing screeds! :)

I was particularly encouraged to see so many young people!LOL! I would include you in that description of youth! Was a pleasure to meet you at CPAC. Such a cutie!
p.s. Please take care that John Edwards isn't re-elected to the U.S. Senate as a fallback from his failed attempt to win the Demoncrap Presidential primary...please...

LOL! I would include you in that description of youth! Was a pleasure to meet you at CPAC. Such a cutie! Hi NN. You're making me blush!!
It was also a pleasure to meet you. I hope to see you next year, along with some of the FReepers I apparently missed!
I should have qualified that "young people" comment by saying I meant "under 25" (I will be 33 this year).
I must add, though, that I still get carded constantly, but... if my hair wasn't so short, you would see all the gray!
