From the web site Rich Dann's Aviation World.......(www.ghg.net/ltdann).... Designer of the STS 107 patch

During the Spring of 2001, I participated in the design of the patch for Shuttle Mission STS-107, currently slated for launch on January 16, 2003.
The patch is in the shape of a space shuttle, surprisingly, never used as the shape of a patch for any other shuttle mission to orbit. The objective of STS-107 is microgravity research.
On the right side of the patch is the earth with a sun rising. To the left is the constellation Columba, which has 7 stars. The stylized Greek letters M and G are seen at the bottom of the patch, and they flow upwards in to a representation of the astronaut pin.
TOPICS: Miscellaneous; News/Current Events

Where did that screen shot come from???
I had no idea that the shuttle could travel that fast...

No wonder it got so hot, moving at 18 times the speed of light. What is that in terms of Warp???

Warp 18, right? I think CNN has watched too many Star Trek movies.

The stylized Greek letters M and G are seen at the bottom of the patch,... Maybe I'm missing something real obvious here but what is the significance of the letters M and G?

Depends on if you're Old Trek or New Trek. Old Trek, it's about Warp 2.6 or so.

That's Mu... used as the symbol for "micro"... there were microgravity experiments done on this mission... thus "µg"

I was wondering that myself! Hope someone posts the answer....

Micro Gravity research activities.

I kept wondering what the 'm' and 'g' stood for. Thank you for posting this.

Not having any access to Fox News, I had to endure CNN's coverage. So many remarks by the talking head were based more on 'star trek' science than actuall science it was almost as painfull by itself as the event being covered.
Sad thing was most people wouldn't even realize how stupid half what the guy was saying really was.
