Whereas there is little to no oversight over Washington state's legislators, there is no accountability nor penalty for filing bills that benefit special interests at the expense of others, that punish taxpayers further, that wastes the taxpayers' hard-earned money, and that far too often are simply ill-considered and even counter-productive to the ends for which they are filed,
Be it resolved that The Washington State Legislators' Hall of Shame is hereby established.
TOPICS: Crime/Corruption; Government; US: Washington
KEYWORDS: bills; laws; legislators; representatives; senators; shame; waste
This was mentioned in the WA locale list a few days ago. Others might find it amusing. (On a slow dial-up connection one sees the alternate text associated with the pictures.)

Good enough. Wish we had this for our judges too...

Here's my nomination to the Hall of Shame; Also, the Lt. Governor wants the State Patrol to chauffeur his wife around. This craziness should qualify to be a candidate also.
By Representative Steve Kirby
Read first time 01/30/2003. Referred to Committee on Technology,
Telecommunications & Energy.
AN ACT Relating to use tax on electricity consumption; adding a new section
to chapter 82.12 RCW; adding a new section to chapter 82.14 RCW; and providing
an effective date.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
{+ NEW SECTION. +} Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter 82.12 RCW
to read as follows:
(1) There is hereby levied and there shall be collected from every person
in this state a use tax for the privilege of consuming electrical energy within
this state.

I don't know where I first read about Brad Owen's request, but on Mike Siegal's show this AM he and Bob Williams, (EFF),discussed the request. It's crazy. What do you think that would cost annually, $100,000.00. Buy her a Segway Human Transport. They're legal on the street in Olympia.
To: bigfootbob
Bob,
Did you send this to the site? What's the bill number?
To: bigfootbob
Brad Owen??? He seemed like a good guy (wrong party, though), way back when I met him in the 80s.
He still says hi to the goodwife when she's down in Olympia lobbying (as she is this morning); I'll have to ask her to question him about this.

I sure did. The bill number is HB 1552. I don't know why it didn't appear on the last post. The sentence that is the most angering states..."the privilege of consuming electrical energy in the State." Can you believe that?

"Brad Owen??? He seemed like a good guy (wrong party, though), way back when I met him in the 80s."Those are Mike Siegal and Bob Williams words to the tee. They suggest it's the "nature of the BEAST" in Olympia. Good men loose their way. Just shows to me how much wasted money is in Olympia regardless of what they say.
To: bigfootbob
Drat. I just talked with the goodwife -- and missed the
opportunity to ask Brad Owen! He passed by her (and said "hi") just seconds before she called me. Next time, I guess...

Wonder how they'd apply the tax. I know a woman who, although she lives "off the grid," "consumes electricity" in the state of Washington.
The bill sure sounds like a great candidate for the site.
To: bigfootbob
bigfootbob, I just checked the site and your suggestion was accepted and posted.

Good! He sent me an e-mail earlier saying he was going to include SB 1552 this evening! It's a ridiculous bill.
