City says no to a war with Iraq

BY GINNY HALLER

keysnews.com

KEY WEST - The city commission has said no to a first strike military action by the United States against Iraq. The moment after City Commissioner Carmen Turner introduced a resolution that asked for a multilateral diplomatic approach to Iraq, the audience in Old City Hall stood and cheered.

"I have a 23-year-old son," said Mayor Jimmy Weekley. "My greatest fear is to lose my son over a conflict that I believe to be about oil."

Speaker after speaker uttered words of peace and wishes for the city motto of One Human Family to be extended to the rest of the world.

"Sixty two cities have passed this resolution, and the entire state of Maine," said Stuart Petersen, a Key West High School student. "Let's make Key West the 63rd and extend our motto to the rest of the world."

But Douglas Jones said the resolution was circumventing his rights as a citizen of Key West for the city commission to say his voice will not be heard on a national level.

"Please don't make my opinion not matter," said Jones. "It is not the point tonight to give in to a loud majority to disenfranchise our community."

Commissioners Merili McCoy and Harry Bethel were the dissenting votes, McCoy reluctantly cast a no vote as she supported the concerns of the audience.

"I will write a letter to the President about this issue," said McCoy before she reluctantly cast a no vote. "But this is a curious resolution, that we take a stand for all of the people in the city. I feel as if I have been put in a position of being a war monger if I don't support this resolution."

Bethel said no one wants a war, that he respects what was said last night, but he must support the choices of the president and U.S. Congress.

In other business, the commissioners gave a unanimous vote of confidence to City Manager Julio Avael with a three year extension of his contract.

"When I first became a commissioner I wanted to duke it out with Julio Avael," said Commissioner Tom Oosterhoudt, who added that he is impressed with how Avael is able to see the big picture of all the issues in the city.

Key West, one of my fave places in days of yore, is increasingly filled with fruit loops who would much rather kill one another with HIV than stand for a just war. Whatever the issue, the answer is the same....bend over.

That's funny. :-) Remember the Peter Sellers movie in the '60s, "The Mouse the Roared"? The plot was there was this Lichtenstein-like nation in Europe, the Dutchy of Grand Fenwick, and they decided on a plan to declare war on the US, lose, and be recipients of all sorts of foreign aid from the US after the "war." The problem was, they ended up defeating the US. (Or at least that's how I understand the plot going...There was a sequel: "The Mouse on the Moon," about the Dutchy's space program.)

what's not funny is that they still issue a Conch Republic Passport on Whitehead Street in Key West

Mohammad Atta of World Trade tower infamy traveled in and out of the US on his Conch Republic passport and our ever vidulant civil servants duityfully stamped this document each trip.

The FBI was all over the office .... but they are still issuing Conch Republic passports even today

Somehow I don't think he or his son have ever been within 500 miles of a military base.

There are Navy and Coast Guard Bases on Key West, probably located there just to protect the soft minded souls like the mayor who populate the place full time.

Don't worry about the flakes on Key West though, God made places like that for those unable to cope with too much reality. The people in NY who think like that are the people who worry me.

You'll need more than a case. I've found that 40 to 50 cases are needed to clean out most stubborn Anti-War Demon-Traitors.

Sorry, but I couldn't read the whole article. It really chaps my hide when elected municipal 'officials' think it is there charter to define foreign policy.

If he doesn't like what the feds are doing, he should write his congresscritter like everyone else. I can't believe these dweebs are wasting what meager resources they have to on things that are not in their charter.

They should be worrying about getting the trash picked up, how they're going to pay the dog catcher, not grandstanding for national press.

It is time for any person with any brains cells left undamaged to evacuate Key West. Let the others contemplate their navels and read streisand's website. We will alert them when it's safe to return to the bitching, whining, belly-aching, and general pain-in-the-ass status they have as U.S. citizens. Better yet, let's just send them the message in a bottle.

Pulitzer Prize winning Jeff McNelly lived there also (but he came from here, I have to brag). The best political (and also other types) cartoonist ever. And other types of art media also. Some of the best satirical Clinton art work I've ever seen. The rooster/Clinton is a riot! If the Mrs. has her way, we may find ourselves living down that way too in a few years. The cats would have to go though.
