Posted on 02/05/2003 5:40:22 PM PST by kristinn

Thursday, February 6 at 7:00PM • Notra Trulock • At Olsson's Metro Center, 1200 F St, NW, 202-347-3686

Former Director of the Intelligence at the U.S. Department of Energy, Notra Trulock discusses his new book, "Code Name Kindred Spirit: Inside the Chinese Nuclear Espionage Scandal." Mr. Trulock describes how he came to suspect Chinese spies were compromising U.S. security and how the trail led to Wen Ho Lee. After Mr. Trulock came forward with this information, it forced the Clinton administration to address the security breaches in our natoin's nuclear weapons complex.

This the same Notra Trulock who did everything he could to spike discussion of XUSSR nuclear surety issues in 1993, because Bill Clinton et al wanted to preserve the fiction that Russia wasn't completely falling apart?

ME?! He started it (by having a good sense of humor).

I finished reading Mr. Trulock's book last night. Wow, I bet he's proud of the fact that the text is updated to indicate that Sen. Lott is no longer majority leader. Things happen fast . . . .

I'm very interested in this. I have one college friend who worked at Los Alamos, and I also know Norman Bay, the U.S. Attorney for New Mexico during part of this time. Therefore, I intend to listen intently and it's just as well that BufordP isn't there to disturb my brain with his radiowave.

Here's what I'm dying to know: why did so many of the physicists assume Wen Ho Lee was not guilty and was being picked upon? It's not like those types are likely to join unions. I know from the book that the immediate supervisor of the Lees was troubled about all the PRC connections and contacts. But I do get the sense (from one college alum and just generally -- perhaps the zeitgeist the media's created) that other physicists thought (wrongly) that the prosecution of Wen Ho Lee was heavy-handed.

Would it be fair to assume that the physicists were mostly kept in the dark about the underlying facts? Do you hope your book might change their minds too? I'd hate to think of the scientists not trusting such prosecutions: we surely want this group of people to "buy in" to protecting the nation's secrets.

What of Poohbah's comment above?

What's your source for making that statement?

From what I understand, Trulock was very much the expert when it came to Russia and the concerns associated with keeping the nukes from reaching hostile lands and passed these concerns to the people he reported to. Blaming him for something Clinton et al did seems a bit severe.

btw, did you read his book?

Poohbah is silly and wrong. NTrulock's a great patriot. I think Poohbah must be an alternate, duplicate screen name for BufordP. ;) It's a trap to distract us and mire us in confusion with silly cyberbeings. I say we ignore the Pooh.

I'm am not versed in this subject but about three or four years ago I had an interesting encounter. I was waiting in line to see Delbert McClinton at the State Theater in Falls Church. I struck up a conversation with a fellow who worked at DOE in DC. Since Los Alomos was the hot topic we got to talking about that. He had been in Washington for the past 10-15 years as I remember but had been at Los Alomos prior to that for about 15 years. He was a Univ of Chicago graduate with a PHD in Physics. He was livid at what was happening to Wen Ho Lee. He felt that the driving force was racism. In the end, he predicted that Wen Ho Lee would be exonerated.

Hmmm. It's got to be that the scientists didn't inform themselves of the details. Perhaps if I were a scientist working there I'd want to become an expert in avoiding such details and just staying away from that issue.

I mean, it's plain that the whole culture of Los Alamos was -- and sadly is -- one in which the security people are enemies and mindless burueacrats obstructing their scientific work. There's a whole arrogance there. I don't approve of it, but I understand that part of the scientific culture. But scientists are also trained to follow the evidence: so I find it remarkable so few have followed it as Mr. Trulock has.

What's your source for making that statement?

Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, One Point Safe, page 64. He is identified as the guy who ripped into Jessica Stern, author of the 1993 "Russian Fission" report, saying that she vastly overrated the political instability of Russia. His attack gave the DOE the figleaf it needed to bury that paper.

From what I understand, Trulock was very much the expert when it came to Russia and the concerns associated with keeping the nukes from reaching hostile lands and passed these concerns to the people he reported to. Blaming him for something Clinton et al did seems a bit severe.

Like I said, he was the hatchet man. He may have gotten religion later, but in 1993, he was the guy saying that Russia was stable and that we didn't need to worry about nuclear surety issues.
