Lazio was not wonderful, but he would have been better than Clinton.
As things are now, New York conservatives have no representation in the Senate. Even "moderate" New Yorkers have no representation.
I think Schumer was deliberately (and uncharacteristically) low-key during Hillary Clinton's 2000 run for the Senate, because Liberals were afraid that New Yorkers might think twice about electing yet another left-winger who would like to "revamp" our government.
The liberals had to protect the dirty little secret, that only liberal New Yorkers would have Senate representation, if Clinton were elected.
