Wasn't Charles Martel a German FRANK, and not a Latin GAUL?

Of course, it was Polish soldiers, fighting in the hope of gaining their homeland back, that were responsible for many of Napolean's early victories. - Posted by dfwgator to wildandcrazyrussian On News/Activism ^ 02/07/2003 3:41 PM EST #26

If one looks at a historical atlas of European history, such as the one I just pulled off the shelf, the "Hammond Historical World Atlas / Volume Two", 1992, page H-31, one sees that in early 1812, current France, Belgium, Netherlands, northwest Italy, and Illyria were part of the Frence Empire; Spain and the Confederation of the Rhine and the Grand Duchy of Warsaw were under direct control of Napoleon; and Prussia and the Austrian Empire were allied with Napoleon. Except for Great Britain, Portugal, and Scandinavia in the west and the Balkans under Islamic rule in the east, all of Europe therefore WAS under control of or allied with the French Empire.

Interestingly, this means that the Poles were, as of 1812, under either French or Austrian rule. Hence there was no such thing as Poles fighting for independence from Russian rule in 1812. They would have had to fight against Napoleon and the Hapsburgs to be independent in that year.

By the same token, this was than two centuries after all of Russia had been under POLISH rule (high point 1610-1613 duirng Time of Troubles).

"Well they did defeat Greenpeace at the infamous "Battle of the Rainbow Warrior."

This is difficult. I don't know whether I hate the Frogs or the envirocommunists more. Hmm...kinda like trying to figure out who to root for at the battle of Stalingrad.

Center right conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt reported THIS joke recently:
Q: How many divisions does it take to defend PARIS?

A: We don't know; it has never been tried!
