Planning hack attack

WASHINGTON - President Bush has signed a secret order allowing the government to develop guidelines under which the U.S. could launch cyberattacks against foreign computer systems, officials said yesterday.

The government has no rules for deciding the circumstances under which such attacks could be launched, who would authorize them and what targets would be legitimate. The U.S. has never conducted a large-scale cyberattack, but officials said last month that the unfolding cyberstrategy plan made it clear that the Defense Department can wage cyber warfare if the nation is attacked. The Washington Post said the Pentagon has stepped up development of cyberweapons - envisioning a day when soldiers could sit at computer terminals and silently invade foreign networks to shut down radar, disable electrical facilities and disrupt phone service.

The most devastating attack would be against enemy banking and credit card systems. In Iraq there is one additional target with no equivalent in the West: the food rationing system. Developed as a means of control, the system tracks every person in Iraq, and is a means of food denial against dissidents. If that system went down, even temporarily, it would create untold havoc.

As several posters said earlier today:

If you REALLY want to give Iraq some computer problems, just get them to install Microsoft Windows .....

That site in Iraq should have been hacked long ago for humanitarian reasons.

That's like failing to bomb the rail lines to the death camps during WWII.

Boy that will show Iraq won't it?

Turn Bill Gates loose on them and we will win hands down.

They will be too busy handling the daily crashes to worry about fighting.
