I thought the hajj was already going on - what were all those pictures of crowds in Mecca I saw on TV the last few days?

Actually Hajj is a very social gathering...very Mardi Gras like...many people get togther estimates this year 1.5 million...therefore you will see alot of activity...but look at the calendar...BTW NYC will celebrate the Eid on Feb 12 2003 here in the USA. Remember have to account for dateline day change...so they are always a day ahead of us...
