I'm not disagreeing with you about the immorality of screwing the workers. Just wondering why the workers didn't ever put plans in place in case they got screwed.

Most of the people did put some money away and paid off their houses etc.

But where would they get insurance for anything near as cheaply as the company provided? You can't.

And how would you set something like that up ahead of time?

Old timers like these lived in a time where there was such a thing as honor and integrity in America. Contracts were made with a handshake. You left your doors unlocked. They took pride in their work. And "made in the U.S.A." meant something.
