The Pope's aides say he remains profoundly concerned over the possibility of war against Iraq and especially for the possible effects of the war upon the Iraqi people, 3% of whom are Catholics. I wonder if Saddam has a preference as to the religion of those he tortures.

This is the old "Bethlehem Church hostage situation" scenario again that worked so well on the Israelis last year.

This is a good thing. The envoy will certainly fail to talk any sense into Saddam but they can say they tried and failed and let the bombing begin.
I know we need to take out Saddam but if by some miracle (I DO believe in miracles) he could be persuaded to leave Iraq along with his closest thugs and put in exile, I wouldn't be unhappy. I worry about our troops and chemical warfare. I know they are tough and prepared but what if they didn't have to even chance it?

Iraq would welcome a visit by Pope John Paul in the hope of..... using the Pope as a human shield.

Perhaps this Pope can wake up and step into the fray in the Sudan one day soon before the entire Christian population is slaughtered by Muslims.

88Retired French Cardinal Roger Etchegaray is expected to tell the Iraqis they should co-operate fully with UN weapons inspectors.**
Maybe we should tell France that a Frenchman is going to Iraq! LOL! <sarcasm off

I know it's Monday and all,so I could just not be seeing this, but where in the article does it say Pope John Paul II is going to Iraq?

The Pope is not going to Iraq. It would do no good, and he knows he would be used by Hussein.
That's why he's sending Etchegary.
Not that that will do any good either.
From here on, anyone who begs for Hussein to be "reasonable" is an ignorant dupe of a man who is stalling for time.
It won't work.
