Something to the effect (and I am paraphrasing the late President LBJ on the tape as exactly as I can) about a joke re: "now this black boy gets caught in a closet by an angry husband who came happened to come home and found him with his wife."

And the President's punchlist was something like "the angry husband yells, 'why you black son of a _______, what are you doing in there (the closet)?', and that black boy responded (LBJ going into his 'Amos n Andy' here), "well, everybody gots to be somewhere!" Then one long, approving hardy har har by the President laughing at his own joke (and laughing on the other side of the phone line....some Senator I think).

If a Republican had such a tape released today, even if he were long in the grave such as LBJ, the national media in the US would slander his sorry arse as a racist up one side of the country and down the next for weeks on-end.

This was on an NPR Radio show over the last weekend, something called "The Lyndon Johnson Tapes". As I said, the exerpt is very clear, and it was recorded I believe some time in 1965.
