STUPID IDEA OF THE DAY
The award goes to Georgia State Representative Larry Walker. He wants a law passed which will require all trucks with more than six wheels to drive 10 miles per hour under the posted speed limit. This will be the unintended consequences legislative poster child for this session, just as the disastrous predatory lending bill was last year.

So in places where the speed limit is 10, trucks are stopped, and places where the limit is 5, trucks have to go 5 MPH backwards.

In Ohio we have a 65 mph speed limit on the interstate, but only 55 for large trucks. Nothing ties up traffic like a truck going 55 passing one going 54 tying up two lanes of traffic for miles.
If you're lucky it is a three lane highway so three lanes of cars are crammed into one lane to pass the trucks. It's so much safer than letting everyone drive 65. < /sarcasm>

I believe Indiana has a similar law--60 for semis, 70 for everyone else. It's hazardous.

The man's insane- it's speed differentials that cause wrecks & kill, not speed alone. This is plumb stupid, and he ought to be driven from office!

Have you ever seen a big truck going the speed limit? No, never. They're always doing five to 15 MPH over the posted limit.

They already make it hard to earn a living trucking in GA. Might as well outlaw trucks.

this is how stupid laws get passed. Some idiot thinks up a new law, without regard for the consequences, and gets it passed.
like toilets flushing with half the water ... (I would like to get my hands on the neck of the moron who first proposed this... anyone know who it was?)

Ya'll don't get it. See, this law will ensure that many more speeding tickets will be issued thus increasing state revenues. Follow the money.

And the increase in tickets will show a large number of scofflaws out there justifing more troopers to ensure the " rule of law". Repeat as needed.

This is another prime example some dumbass with an agenda...
Anyway - accidents on highways (IMHO) are caused not by how fast traffic is travelling - but differences in speed that vehicles are travelling.

Georgia State Representative Larry Walker: "I'm stupid. Yes, indeed, I'm stupid."
I wonder what the ratio is for stupid laws vs. good laws. 100:1? 10,000:.01?

Yeah, but if those trucks have out of state plates, your Ohio road dogs will ticket them for 3 mph over the limit. Been there, done that. Sometimes, its safer for everyone to speed up a little and get the obstructions resolved safely. Ohio is the only place I've driven where oncoming traffic flashes its headlights at the traffic going the other way to warn of road dogs ahead.

My uncle did get pulled over for a "vehicle safety inspection" after doing that. When the officer had him test his headlights, he told my uncle "They don't seem to be having that blinking problem now."

Michigan has a speed limit for cars at 75 and trucks at 55 mph.
They are constantly pulling squished cars out from under the backs of trucks in that state.
