I can see all the accusations from Europe and elsewhere along the lines of the Americans "obviously having forgotten what the statue represents."

Accusations from Europe and elsewhere mean nothing. Absolutely nothing. They chose this path.

Surely not all of Europe and elsewhere chose "this path"? It might not be unreasonable to assume that the elsewhere I included implies pretty much the rest of the world. Such attitudes as yours will surely reinforce the increasing world opinion that America doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks, whenever that is at odds with American thinking, and that America is just going to muscle its way wherever and whenever it wants to anyway?

I know America is currently pretty much all powerful, and in actuality can do just about what it wants to, but I wonder how wise it is to reinforce hardening attitudes concerning American "hegemonistic" tendencies, as recent American behaviour has been described; especially in relation to obviously desirable cooperation in the war on terrorism?
