Hysteria runs riot; networks fuel the fear (Let us be more rational about our paranoia )

Sixty years ago, enterprising and patriotic Americans saved tinfoil and bacon grease to help defeat Hitler during World War II, heeding the old Office of War Information motto, "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it last."

Some pockets of panic in California did develop immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack of December 7, 1941. However, when Japanese balloon bombs drifted near the West Coast or Nazi U-boats were spotted off New Jersey, Americans learned how to extinguish an incendiary bomb or spot the silhouettes of enemy submarines.

old Office of War Information motto, "Use it up. Wear it out. Make it last."

She didn't finish the line:

Use It Up / Wear It Out / Make It Do / Or Do Without

Good advice, all the same.

Much of what the media and FEMA are telling us to do we should be doing regardless. In case of any type of emergency (be it weather related or terrorist, etc) everyone should have an emergency kit. Keeping family phone numbers or "meeting places" is just common sense.

Here in Michigan, I always keep an extra flashlight, candles, matches, etc in case of power outage. The power company is better now atgetting power restored after storms, but why take the chance.

But Duct taping the windows is just plain silly.

The media seems to be fixated on duct tape, but it's really more about being prepared for an emergency in a sensible manner.

I had purchased a BayGen flashlight and radio (hand-cranked, no batteries) for our boat and they're in our emergency kit. I always have at least a week's supply of canned food, plus few extra small bottles of propane for our BBQ on hand at all times.

Ever since I heard this official government announcement to seal up a room with plastic and duct tape I couldn't help to think that there are waaaaay to many affirmative action employees in the Homeland Security Department. If you were to seal a room well enough to keep any harmful germs or chemicals out you would also keep any oxygen out and keep lots of carbon dioxide in. What's the government going to say when thousands of asphyxiated families turn up in sealed rooms opened by worried neighbors and family members???

The hysteria angle of this story is a little overblown. When a hurricane is coming you keep your eye on the story and start calmly taking the obvious and pragmatic precautions when it appears imminent. No doubt war is immminent, against an enemy that will be trying to strike here with an array of possible weapons, including chemicals. Reacting by buying canned foods, bottled water, prescriptions, etc. is smart. Even extra rations for the dogs won't go bad.

General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you recall what Clemenceau once said about war?

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No, I don't think I do, sir, no.

General Jack D. Ripper: He said war was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, war is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
