Dutch pilots give Nasa video of Columbia

13 February

AMSTERDAM — Two Dutch air force pilots have given Nasa a video that might be the clearest images of the last moments of the doomed space shuttle Columbia, according to an NOS news report.

The report said that the two pilots were on a routine training flight in an Apache ground attack helicopter at Fort Hood in Texas when the aircraft's cameras filmed the shuttle as it broke up during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on 1 February.

The Apache's camera footage is better than that by video cameras used by civilians. Nasa told NOS it was hopeful the new pictures would help in the investigation into the disaster.

The Dutch military operates several US-made Apache helicopters and the pilots carry out some of their training in the US.

On 12 February, Nasa's top official Sean O'Keefe told the first US congressional hearing into the tragedy that throughout Columbia's 16-day mission there were "no indications" the disaster would occur.

Nasa has released an audio tape of the last conversation between its mission control and the shuttle's crew, but the BBC reported that it is still unclear what caused Columbia to disintegrate 40 miles (65km) above the Earth, killing all seven astronauts.

Despite the pictures' caption, those are NOT "contrails".

I heard they were BLACK Apaches too. Rumor is the Dutch have been assigned Texas to control when the UN takes over.

LOL. I have little doubt that we have pilots from one of our staunchest allies training in the US. It just 'shows to go ya' how much a person can learn here on FR.
