The filibuster of Miguel Estrada for Judge: DEMOCRATS Hate Catholic Hispanics
GOPLatino ^ | Marc B. Geller and Jeff Parrott

The task force also discussed:

•Urging the Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee to schedule confirmation hearings for Miguel Estrada, a Honduran-born Washington lawyer who was nominated a year ago by President Bush to the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington.

Altman criticized Democrats for opposing Estrada's nomination because of his pro-life stance and adherence to Catholic beliefs.

"This is definitely what I would call religious discrimination," she said. "I spoke to him and he said he would follow the law of the land, regardless of his religion."

Other Lugar representatives to the task force include Fran Martinez of South Bend, Judy Jochem-Nino of Huntingburg, Herb Hernandez of Fort Wayne and Esperanza Zendejas of Indianapolis, Lugar spokesman Nick Weber said.

Immigration is one of the major issues of interest to Hispanic communities across Indiana, Weber said.

"Our Indiana offices get a huge volume of calls and letters concerning immigration issues," he said. "It is really one of our highest constituent requests that we deal with back in Indiana.

"Ms. Altman, in working at Ivy Tech, has been sort of on the forefront of a lot of these issues. I'm sure the senator feels that it will help the entire group to have someone associated with higher education, with a community the size of Lafayette."

At the college, Altman conducts multicultural awareness workshops, assists with minority recruitment and serves a bridge between Ivy Tech and the Hispanic community.

Weber said Altman also was picked for her experience serving on Gov. Frank O'Bannon's Indiana Commission on Hispanic and Latino Affairs, which "gives her some breadth of state knowledge outside of Lafayette."

The task force was scheduled to hold its first meeting of the current 107th Congress on Sept. 13-14, but the meeting was postponed until this week. Altman said she expects to return to Washington sometime this fall.

Let's face it folks.

The Democrats are saying that Catholic lawyers are not eligible to participate in our system because of their Catholic belief system.

Hispanics are not all Catholic, but they are largely Catholic. Many more are of other conservative religious traditions.

This is RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION and RELIGIOUS bigotry at it's worst.

DEMOCRATS HATE CATHOLIC HISPANICS

That's what I thought when I saw if PKMOM.

I hadn't thought of it. But it's apparent that any reasonably observant Hispanic Catholic could NEVER be supported by the Democratic Party for confirmation to any office, much less a judgeship.

A large percentage of Hispanics are Roman Catholics. They should be up in arms about this.

This man is being discriminated against because he's roman catholic.

I love your reasoning -- it makes perfect sense! What they are saying is that if you are a Catholic judge the sign is out -- "DO NOT APPLY!"

You know the RATs are in trouble when Mark Russell makes the following joke:

Estrada is an immigrant from Honduras and the Democrats go crazy when they find a Latino who is not one of theirs. They have asked immigration authorities to be on the alert for more conservative Republicans trying to sneak over the border.

This anti-catholic bent on the part of the Democrats does extend disproportionately to Americans of certain ethnic backgrounds.

Those that are disproportionately catholic would be: Hispanic, Irish, Italian.

I believe very strongly that the Democrats hate everything. Nothing makes them happy, nor will it ever.

Exactly.

How could I overlook? Large populations in both Illinois and Pennsylvania if I remember correctly. Strongly catholic. Sorry.

If the D's are going to use the litmus test of a persons belief on the life issue they might as well hang a sign on the door of their chambers, Catholics Need Not Apply."

I don't have the numbers, but I'm guessing that 65%+ of hispanics are Catholic. Those that aren't are family members of many who are. How'd you like someone to tell you that they won't even consider your cousin or uncle or niece for a job, DESPITE THEIR BEING A HARVARD UNIVERSITY HONORS GRADUATE, just because they also happen to be catholic?
